Course Description
This course is designed to enable you to develop a basic knowledge of factors that influence the physical growth, health, and motor skill development of individuals from birth through adulthood. It will also provide an insight into how physical activity can benefit health across a diverse range of populations.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the development of the following Program Learning Outcomes for BP296 Bachelor of Applied Science (Exercise and Sport Science):
- PLO 1: Apply knowledge of the underlying principles and concepts of Exercise and Sport Science. Including the core areas of: Human Physiology, Anatomy, Functional Anatomy, Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, Motor Learning and Control, Exercise Metabolism and Nutrition, and Psychology
- PLO 4. Communicate knowledge through a variety of modalities
On successful completion of this course you should be able to:
- Identify and elaborate the stages of growth, development and ageing, and relate them to physical capacity, motor skills and health.
- Describe how age and other factors affect the capacity to undertake physical activities and the effect of physical activity on health across a diverse range of ages and populations.
- Explain how exercise may be conceptualised and undertaken by different populations, including indigenous populations, people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds and older adults.
- Demonstrate knowledge of indigenous health issues and related benefits of physical activity.
Overview of Learning Activities
Online lectures, tutorials and laboratories. You are given the opportunity to accept responsibility for your own learning, work in a team and individually as well as communicate skills and knowledge in a variety of ways and contexts.

Learning resources in this course include online lectures, tutorial and laboratory manual, as well as laboratory briefings and tutorials on selected topics. The myRMIT system provides opportunities for you to independently access this material. It will be your advantage to access and review all materials provided.
Overview of Assessment
All hurdle requirements for this course are indicated clearly in the assessment regime that follows, against the relevant assessment task(s) and all have been approved by the College Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching).
Tutorial and Laboratory Attendance Hurdle (PASS/FAIL)
In order to pass the course, you are required to attend and actively participate in 80% of the tutorial and laboratory sessions throughout the semester. In the case of students failing to attend the minimum number of sessions for reasons other than medical, additional sessions will not be provided by the course. Students who fail to attend the requisite number of sessions and who are granted Special Consideration will become eligible to complete supplementary assessment to meet the attendance hurdle requirement. Students who arrive after the class has commenced or who leave before the class finishes will be marked as having arrived late or left early. You will be provided with one warning, and for each subsequent instance of this behaviour you will be marked as being absent.
