Course Description

In this course you will undertake a professional placement of 70 days (500 hours). You will be placed in an organisation and be involved in a range of activities which may include community organisation, program and/ or policy development / implementation / evaluation, professional research, community work and/or service delivery. This course will enable you to synthesise and integrate your knowledge, connect theory and practice as well as demonstrate your holistic achievement of the program learning outcomes. This course is based upon experiential learning in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to assessment of your experience.

In this course, you will be allocated to a placement by the academic staff. You will be allocated based on a range of factors, including the information you provide in your Personal Planning Form (PPF) and whether you meet the requirements of the placement and organisation.

Please note that:

·         You must be enrolled in Field Education to participate in the allocation process.

·         The allocation process commences at least 4 months prior to your enrolment in Field Education.

·         Certain preparation tasks must be completed in advance of your enrolment in Field Education for you to be eligible to participate in the allocation process. For example, you must, by the appropriate deadlines:

o        Complete a Police Check and Working With Children Check

o        Upload a current CV into InPlace

You must complete all compulsory non-academic requirements and preparatory activities to be considered for placement allocation.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Apply contextually relevant ethics and standards for social work practice in accordance with the AASW Code of Ethics and Practice Standards in all areas of engagement
  • Identify and critically review the organisational, legal and political contexts of human services processes
  • Apply and critically reflect on theories and methodologies relevant to social work practice in community organisation, program and/ or policy development, implementation, evaluation and community work across different contexts
  • Engage in research to inform your professional practice, recognising the value of research as an integral part of social work practice


 

You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes:

  • apply a body of interdisciplinary knowledge, values and skills in working with and for society’s most vulnerable and marginalised individuals, families, groups and communities
  • critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on issues of social disadvantage, marginalisation and oppression in both local and international contexts, and proactively work to promote social justice and human rights
  • work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness while promoting respectful, ethical and reflective practice
  • use appropriate research methods to design and execute a professional or research project, and communicate using diverse formats and strategies to stakeholders within and external to the discipline

These course learning outcomes and program learning outcomes align with the Australian Association of Social Work’s nine core learning areas.


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities will include the 70 days (500 hours) field placement, development of a learning plan, mid-placement review and final placement assessment report across all nine learning areas. You will be supported through placement planning and preparation in consultation with the Social Work Field Education Coordinator and other relevant staff.
