Course Description
This course examines modern, complex businesses from a behavioural perspective while also exploring a firm’s internal organisation, boundary and growth. It covers issues such as why firms exist, how they are organised internally, what their scope is and what motivates their managers and employees.
Understanding the nature and role of the modern economic organisation is crucial for the design and operation of any successful business. This course applies theoretical concepts to practical issues in business decision making, strategy and organisational design in a professional context.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
CLO1: Explore modern developments in the field of industrial organisation, focusing on psychological and behavioural concepts of organisational design;
CLO2: Identify the internal and external factors that affect a firm’s choice of organisational design and determine what types of organisational design exist in various types of companies;
CLO3: Utilise a systemic theoretical framework to analyse real-world business problems;
CLO4: Evaluate the welfare effects of various aspects of a firm’s behaviour, and communicate the findings.
Overview of Learning Activities
In this course you will be encouraged to be an active learner. Your learning will be supported through various in-class and online activities comprising of individual and/or group work. These may include quizzes; assignments; prescribed readings; sourcing, researching and analysing specific information; solving problems; conducting presentations; producing written work and collaborating with peers on set tasks or projects. These in-semester activities will incorporate formative assessments to monitor ongoing progress.
