Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
Co-requisites
AD023
- Commercial Pilot Licence Theory
Pre-requisites:
AD023
- Theory to Private Pilot Licence (PPL),
- Flying to PPL,
- Introduction to CPL
or
A holder of CASA PPL including Flight Radio Telephone Operator Licence (FROL) & Introduction to CPL
Note: It is a condition of enrolment at RMIT that you accept responsibility for ensuring that you have completed the pre-requisite/s and agree to concurrently enrol in co-requisite courses before enrolling in a course.
Course Description
This course further consolidates your skills and knowledge of flying and navigation sequences learnt and tested in the previous Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL) and PPL courses.
This course will provide you with enhanced flying skills and pre-flight actions and procedures that are in accordance with commercially oriented operational requirements, along with flight planning actions that are augmented to introduce operational efficiencies into the planning process.
You will be prepared to undertake the CASA Commercial Pilot Licence Flight test.
The flying hours in this course are designed to meet the CASA requirements and you will have the option to pay for any additional flying hours through a material fee should additional flight training be required.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) for AD023 Associate Degree in Aviation (Professional Pilot):
- Demonstrate knowledge of underpinning theoretical aviation principles, and analyse information to complete a range of activities
- Demonstrate the cognitive, technical and creative thinking skills to a broad understanding of the aviation industry, and to provide specialist advice and functions.
- Ability to apply a depth of knowledge in a range of industry practice fundamentals in contexts that are subject to change, and adapt knowledge and skills in a range of contexts.
- Demonstrate the application of skills and knowledge to adapt fundamental principles, concepts and techniques to known and unknown situations
- Problem identification, formulation and solution to unpredictable and sometimes complex problems
- Plan and execute activities to an appropriate professional standard
- Show initiative and judgement in planning, problem solving and decision making in aviation practice; with communication and analytical skills to interpret and transmit responses to sometimes complex problems
- Communication skills to make clear and coherent presentation of knowledge and ideas with some intellectual independence
- Understanding of and commitment to professional and ethical responsibilities
- Taking responsibility and accountability for own learning and work in collaboration with others within broad parameters.
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
On completion of this course you should be able to demonstrate:
- The technical competence to establish technical skills appropriate to the diversity of practice in the Aviation Industry.
- The cognitive, technical and creative thinking skills to a broad understanding of the aviation industry, and to provide specialist advice and functions.
- The integrative perspective to develop a broader perspective within the aviation industry, and external to it, and also to demonstrate ability to work with complex systems.
- The ability to plan and execute activities to an appropriate professional standard
- Professional Practice recognises and applies aviation industry skills, attitudes and professional standards.
The learning outcomes from this course should enable you to fly to CASA CPL level; and to build on the underpinning skills and knowledge gained from Theory to CPL
Components of the course include:
- Consolidation of all Recreation Pilot Licence sequences learnt in earlier courses,
- Consolidation of Private Pilot Licence Navigation sequences & Introduction to Commercial Pilot Licence
- Managing pre-flight pilot activity in a simulated commercial environment
- Managing en-route activity in a simulated commercial environment
- Manoeuvring the aeroplane with limited instrument availability
Overview of Learning Activities
Learning in this course will occur through Lectures, Tutorials, Assignments, Practical Demonstration (flight training devices), Classroom Discussion, Handouts, and Presentations. You will participate in classroom theory lessons and use aircraft based.
You will have pre-flight briefings, one-on-one instructor briefings, in-flight practical demonstrations and practice, post-flight briefings using a variety of teaching aids.
Overview of Learning Resources
You will be required to use CASA and other texts and as well as receiving classroom handouts. Videos, practical demonstrations and discussions in the classroom will enhance your learning.
Overview of Assessment
All hurdle requirements for this course are indicated clearly in the assessment regime that follows, against the relevant assessment task(s) and all have been approved by the College Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching). A hurdle requirement is necessary in order to demonstrate to an accrediting body (CASA) that students are competent and being sufficiently assessed against practice-focused professional standards.
Assessment Task 1: Final flight test - Hurdle Assessment
Weighting towards final grade (%): 100%
This assessment supports all CLO’s 1-5
Practical demonstration to a CASA-approved test testing officer of the flying competence of the student to CPL standard as specified by CASA in accordance with the CASA Manual of Standards. A pilot student who is not able to successfully demonstrate competency after three flight examinations will be subject to a school-level review and can be instructed to repeat the entire flying unit.
Your course assessment is consistent with the RMIT assessment and assessment flexibility policy
