Course Description

This course is a requirement for the external accrediting bodies Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) and Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) and is administered through Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). It is not administered through RMIT.  

You are required to: 

  • Attempt this course in Year 1 to progress in the program; and
  • Pass this course before progressing to Year Three of the program in order to be eligible to graduate and register as a teacher.  

The Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students is designed to assess your personal numeracy skills to ensure that you are well equipped to meet the demands of teaching and assist higher education providers, teacher employers and the general public to have increased confidence in the skills of graduating teachers.  

If you have recognised proficiency in a First Nations language, this is an acceptable alternative standard to LANTITE attainment. Please contact the LANTITE coordinator to learn more about the process to confirm recognition of First Nations language proficiency.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes 

It is assumed that all students intending to be teachers have strong personal numeracy skills. The Federal Government has designed the Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education to assess initial teacher education students’ personal numeracy skills to ensure teachers are well equipped to meet the demands of teaching. The Australian Council for Educational Research administers the Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education. 


Course Learning Outcomes 

It is assumed that all students intending to be teachers have strong personal numeracy skills. Overview of Learning Activities

All students are required to have passed the Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education in order to graduate. To sit the test you must register for one of the testing windows. You are responsible for the fees associated with the Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education. The School of Education provides a range of resources to support you in preparing for LANTITE that are housed on Canvas and accessible through your relevant program shell. 


Overview of Learning Resources

Overview of Assessment

The Numeracy test is administered through ACER and please refer to their website for update information around LANTITE. The test has been designed to reflect the contexts in which you are likely to exercise personal numeracy skills. The numeracy component will assess an individual’s capability in numbers and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability. The following final grades are available in this course: PX: Pass, no other grade available. NN: Fail To receive a pass (PX) for this course, you must achieve the required standard in the Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students. ACER will release student results to RMIT University. You are able to apply for Reasonable Adjustments to ACER for the test. This section is not relevant as LANTITE is administered externally by the ACER.
