Course Description

This course is a requirement for the external accrediting bodies Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) and Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) and is administered through Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). It is not administered through RMIT. You are required to pass this course before progressing to Year Three of the program in order to be eligible to graduate and register as a teacher. The Literacy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students is designed to assess your personal literacy skills to ensure that you are well equipped to meet the demands of teaching and assist higher education providers, teacher employers and the general public to have increased confidence in the skills of graduating teachers. It is assumed that all students intending to be teachers have strong personal literacy skills. The Federal and State Governments have designed the Literacy Test for Initial Teacher Education to assess initial teacher education students’ personal literacy skills to ensure teachers are well equipped to meet the demands of teaching. The Australian Council for Educational Research administers the Literacy Test for Initial Teacher Education. 


Overview of Learning Activities

All students entering the BP320 Bachelor of Education program are required to have passed the Literacy Test for Initial Teacher Education by the end of their second year in the program, to progress into the third year. To sit the test you must register for one of the testing windows. Overview of Learning Resources

Overview of Assessment

The Literacy test is administered through ACER. The test has been designed to reflect the contexts in which you are likely to exercise personal literacy skills. The literacy component will assess an individual’s reading, spelling and technical skills in writing. The following final grades are available in this course: • PX: Pass, no other grade available. • NN: Fail To receive a pass (PX) for this course students must achieve the required standard in the Literacy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students. ACER will release student results to RMIT University. You are able to sit each test a maximum of three times.
