Course Description

Medical Imaging requires a detailed knowledge of anatomy, patient positioning, the equipment used, radiation safety and quality assurance and patient care. This course is the fifth in a series of Medical Imaging courses and builds on the fundamental theories of Medical Imaging 1, 2, 3 and 4 to concentrate on application of knowledge to practice. You will need to gain practical skills in order to become a competent medical imaging technologist and this course provides you with the underpinning theory and practice.

This course is designed to further develop and apply the principles for examinations of greater complexity with an introduction to advanced imaging modalities.. At this level you are expected to engage with the literature base in order to support your work and the ability to appraise the literature is required.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for BP321 Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Radiations) (aligned to the Accreditation Standards of the Medical Radiations Practice Board of Australia):

Standard 1

  • Apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology to practice (1.a)
  • Understand and apply the different methods of imaging and treatment (1.c)
  • Confirm the procedure according to clinical indicators (1.d)
  • Assess the patient’s/client’s capacity to receive care (1.e)
  • Implement techniques for patient/client stabilisation and reproducibility of procedures and outcomes (1.f)

  • Perform projection radiography examinations in a range of settings (1A.a)

  • Resolve challenges through application of critical thinking and reflective practice (4.a)

On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Perform and evaluate a wide range of radiographic skills in the areas of general and advanced imaging modalities.
  2. Critically evaluate situations and scenarios to facilitate optimal patient care.
  3. Critically assess medical images using knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology.
  4. Critically evaluate technological principles and physics concepts as they relate to medical imaging.

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.
