Course Description
This course provides foundational skills and knowledge required to make effective use of audio electronics and sound for use in digital film and video. This includes basic concepts of acoustics and practical experience using microphones and recording equipment, mixing desks, MIDI and digital audio workstation software to produce digital audio sonic outputs. You will learn how to plan and mix sound within a scene, clean, match, split, repair and optimize recordings of dialogue, and manage noise and ambience when recording outdoors. You will explore creative, stylistic and expressive potential of music including selection, placement and editing of existing scores.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course you will be able to:
CLO1: Identify and describe creative approaches to sound design in digital film and video.
CLO2: Plan, produce and integrate dialogue, sound effects and music for complex film and video projects.
CLO3: Apply recording and processing tools and methods to complex digital film and video projects.
Overview of Learning Activities
In this course you will engage in studio-based work to acquire and apply technical practices of sound design to support specific staging and direction outcomes. This will involve demonstrated use of relevant technologies and application of technique in guided exercises and tasks relevant to the co-requisite course.
Overview of Learning Resources
You will have access to technical resources such as camera, lighting, sound recording equipment and editing tools, as well as studio-based learning spaces. You will be provided with diverse learning and teaching resources, including web-based resources, library collections, and online learning content. You will also be provided with a range of educational support services, including peer-led academic mentoring, tutorials, and internship and mobility support services.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Assessment Tasks
Assessment Task 1: Sound Design Analysis, 20%, CLO1
Assessment Task 2: Soundtrack Comparison, 30%, CLO1 and CLO2
Assessment Task 3: Original Soundtrack, 50%,CLO2 and CLO3
