Course Description

This course will introduce major screen theories emerging from a broad range of disciplines which may include psychology, linguistics, philosophy, cultural studies, art history, sociology, ethics and political science. You will examine the factors that contribute to the development of particular screen cultures including film-making, circulation and consumption practices. This will include discussion of emerging digital consumption such as digital film festivals and digital fan practices. You will consider the political and social implications of representation and spectatorship from the perspective of cultural identity and reflect upon your own role as a practitioner and consumer in the film and video industry.

In the course you will develop the following program learning outcomes: 

PLO1: Use industry, social, cultural and historical contextual knowledge to explain and analyse digital film and video practice and culture 

PLO2: Interpret global communication and media theory to define and evaluate digital film- and video-making production processes and outputs

 

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course you will be able to: 

CLO1: Identify and discuss major theoretical terms used to define screen culture and practices. 

CLO2: Critically analyse key factors that have contributed to the development of a screen culture within a specific context.  

CLO3: Investigate the development of contemporary screen culture through field-based study. 

Overview of Learning Activities

In this course you will engage in a range of activities that support the development of contextual understanding of digital film and video culture and practice. This may involve active investigation of specific focus areas of contextual knowledge, analysis of source information and media, close examination of materials that exemplify particular concepts and principles, communicating ideas and responses in various formats, and deliberative engagement with peers and teachers.

Overview of Learning Resources

You will have access to technical resources such as camera, lighting, sound recording equipment and editing tools, as well as studio-based learning spaces.  You will be provided with diverse learning and teaching resources, including web-based resources, library collections, and online learning content. You will also be provided with a range of educational support services, including peer-led academic mentoring, tutorials, and internship and mobility support services.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. 

Assessment Tasks 

Assessment Task 1: Report and Annotated bibliography (individual), 25%, Addresses CLO 1. 

Assessment Task 2: Critical comparison (pair), 35%, Addresses CLO 2.  

Assessment Task 3: Field report (group), 40%, Addresses CLO 3.
