Course Description
During this guided immersion, we will explore the heritage of textiles from selected ethnic minority groups in Việt Nam. This course delves into traditional textile practices, symbolic motifs, and narratives. We will learn from their practice of developing materials and what they are used for. In contrast we will explore contemporary textile manufacturing, as well as contemporary textile designers’ practice often based on the Vietnamese culture and heritage. The focus extends beyond aesthetics, to address sustainability and the pertinent issues faced by the textile industry in Việt Nam. Through village visits, industry visits, talks, workshops, and museum visits you will explore the rich tapestry of knowledge that Việt Nam has to share with us.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course will complement the RMIT capabilities you are developing in your program.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify cultural and contemporary Vietnamese textiles.
- Critically assess cultural and contemporary methods of textile production in Vietnam in context of social, commercial and sustainability issues.
- Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness through ethical and reflective practice.
- Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking, innovation and reflection to identify and solve problems in diverse contexts within the field of textiles as well as your own practice.
Overview of Learning Activities
We commence the course online as we initially will be in different locations. We will share history and culture of Việt Nam related to the course content. Best practices for being a visitor of a different culture as a student. We will be going through our itinerary, reading list and other recommendations related to the course.
In the face-to-face travel* part of the course, you will engage and learn in the field, directly from selected ethnic minority groups, industry visits, talks, site visits, workshops and museums, as well as from each other through collaborative engagement. You will also collaborate with your peers in critically reflective discussion of pertinent issues in the textile industry and about your experience.
You will compile a travel journal, a visual diary/sketchbook, that will form the foundation of your own creative development or critical essay. Through notetaking, drawings, photographs and other collected materials that relates to your practice and experience, you will cultivate a more critically informed process of your own work. You will have assessment tasks to complete after your trip hence the importance of the travel journal.
