Course Description

Distributed workforces are no longer unusual in any business context.  Implementing and supporting remote working has become a key business requirement and knowing how to succeed as a team-member, a team leader and/or a manager in remote working situations has become an important attribute for any worker. When the workforce is distributed globally, additional cultural and practical factors also need to be considered. 

This course will explore some of the challenges and opportunities associated with global and remote teams, using applications and real-world examples. Issues such as access to, and security of, business information; organisational and personal responsibilities; managing and motivating remote teams and ensuring the well-being of staff will be evaluated and applied in specific business environments.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development


On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Identify the kinds of opportunities and challenges that workplaces are likely to face when operating across geographical and international locations.
  2. Propose guidelines to support remote working and safeguard an organisation and its staff.
  3. Create a project proposal based on the identification of an opportunity for an organisation to improve its management of global or geographically remote teams.
  4. Undertake reflexive praxis regarding your personal development and behavioural capabilities required of a professional in remote business contexts.

Overview of Learning Activities

This course is delivered as a blend of face-to-face activities (such as: workshops, lectures and group- or industry-based tasks) and online learning. Learning will be focused around the completion of a 12-week project, which will be supported through in-class and online activities. This may include: project development activities; guest speakers/expert commentators; prescribed readings; researching and analysing specific information; solving problems; producing artefacts/ proposing solutions; seeking and providing peer feedback; and reflective praxis.
