Course Description
This course aims to increase your potential for successful study at a global university by building your awareness of how you think and your knowledge of modern approaches and tools that support your study and learning. You will gain a greater understanding of the RMIT student academic journey, and this course will support your transition to a dynamic, collaborative and international learning environment. More specifically, you will develop practical skills to enhance your ability to think critically, communicate effectively, read actively and produce written academic texts while utilising modern tools like Artificial Intelligence in effective and ethical ways. The course will assess you through reflective and critical evaluation and analysis tasks as well as other valuable learning activities. On completion of this course, the learning outcomes will give you a far better opportunity to be highly successful throughout your studies at RMIT University.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Program Learning Outcomes In this course, you will develop the following program learning outcomes: 1. Specify the RMIT values, learning culture and expectations and apply this understanding to build independence and confidence in both general and discipline specific contexts. 2. Develop practical strategies for learning in a Global University. 3. Achieve a level of critical thinking and reflection necessary to learn effectively in 1st year RMIT Vietnam University courses 4. Demonstrate an understanding and willingness to adhere to RMIT values especially academic integrity. 5. Demonstrate a level of proficiency in all forms of communication needed to study in first year University courses.
On successful completion of the course students will be able to: 1. Critically evaluate the strengths and limitations of AI-generated outputs in the context of academic reasoning, writing, and research. 2. Develop and apply strategies to plan, manage and evaluate learning — including the ethical and purposeful use of AI tools - through the formation of practical learning habits and time management skills. 3. Demonstrate active engagement, critical reflection and logical argument in response to a variety of information sources -including AI-generated content. 4. Demonstrate understanding of academic integrity, including the responsible and transparent use of generative AI, and apply appropriate citation practices to avoid plagiarism. 5. Produce academic writing that demonstrates the ability to structure, paraphrase, and summarise ideas — both independently and with support from AI tools — while maintaining academic integrity.

RMIT will provide you with the learning resources and tools needed for this course. A variety of sources, including written texts and audio-visual materials, will be selected and provided by your lecturer.
Overview of Assessment
Assessment 1 (20%): Reflection Task You will generate meaningful and structured reflection on your learning in this course and identify how you can apply newly acquired skills and learning approaches to your university degree program. Aligned CLOs: 2, 3, 5 Assessment 2: In this assessment, you’ll use AI tools to help you read, plan, and draft academic writing. You’ll then reflect on and evaluate the AI’s output, showing your understanding of academic writing principles and how to use AI responsibly and effectively. Assessment 2.1 : (30%) KWL+ / Annotated Bibliography
Record what you already know and want to learn about your topic, then use AI to locate key sources and create an annotated bibliography that summarises and critically evaluates each one.
Assessment 2.2: (50%) Argument Map, Outline, Draft, AI Conversations, and ReflectionPlan your argument with an essay map and outline, draft your essay with AI support, submit the AI chat transcripts, and finish with a reflection explaining how you assessed and refined the AI’s contributions to meet academic writing standards.
