Course Description

In this course, you will be introduced to the specific context of communication and design.You will cover basic concepts, theories and terminology and be introduced to discipline-based skills knowledge and resources. You will learn to work effectively in teams and individually and engage in appropriate methods of presentation and communication.You will be expected to engage in self-reflection and to develop an action plan for success in higher education.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course, you will develop the following program learning outcomes:   PLO1. Specify the RMIT values, learning culture and expectations and apply this understanding to build independence and confidence in both general and discipline specific contexts.   PLO5. Demonstrate a level of proficiency in all forms of communication needed to study in first year University courses   PLO6. Identify and apply independent and collaborative techniques and procedures that are relevant to a particular discipline.   PLO7. Develop and utilise discipline-based vocabulary that will aid their future learning   PLO8. Value discipline-based inquiry processes when compared (and contrasted) with other forms of inquiry.


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:   1. Compare and contrast appropriate research methods and resources as relevant to business and management. 2. Explain concepts orally and writing in the formats and specific vocabulary of business and management. 3. Reflect upon your own skills and knowledge in relation to business and management and develop a personal action plan to address areas for future development. 4. Examine and interpret information from a range of sources and appropriately cite and reference them.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.   Assignment 1 Group project Part 1 research – 25 % Part 2 presentation - 25%. Addresses CLO - 1, 2, 4   Assignment 2 Individual Reflective journal and accompanying action plan - 50% Addresses CLO - 3 Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
