Course Description

This course will introduce you to sustainability as an issue that is influenced by creative practice and thinking. It will focus on the connections between creativity and sustainability in different contexts including in the artworld, cities, tourism, fashion, film, advertising and other creative industries. You will learn how creative work can inform sustainable futures and contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. You will gain knowledge about theories and policies relating to environmental citizenship, ethical consumption, materiality, waste and cultural sustainability. The course encourages you to think critically about how creative skills can respond to diverse sustainability problems and scenarios.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

1. Critically discuss how creativity can be used as a tool for sustainable citizenship.
2. Analyze contemporary sustainability scenarios using theoretical concepts from creative industries and sustainability research.
3. Propose a creative solution to a contemporary sustainability problem.
4. Formulate an individual sustainability pathway that will inform your future personal and professional journey.


Program Learning Outcomes
This course is a university elective and not a core course in any program. 


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be engaged in a range of learning activities which will include lectures, class discussion and presentations, individual and group projects, reading and research. Creative and critical thinking will be encouraged in all activities.

Each class will introduce a theory of cultural or environmental sustainability and apply this to a different creative context. You will be provided with group discussion topics and asked to respond to sustainability problems. Students are encouraged to contribute their perspectives and develop critical analysis skills through processes of comprehension, application, evaluation, and reflection.

The Canvas site for this course will give you access to the recommended learning resources, including articles, books, web resources and videos. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes. Assessment tasks will involve written work, presentations and creative projects, working individually or in groups.
