Course Description

This course focuses on the significance of communication in health professional and biomedical science practice. You'll examine factors affecting professional communication, including personal values and cultural influences. The content covers key aspects such as professionalism, ethical practice, inter-professional collaboration, and digital literacy. The goal is to develop communication skills essential for culturally-safe and reflective practice in your future health and biomedical science profession. The course also addresses using communication to build inclusive communities. It explores the “me” in a discipline-specific context and your role as an emerging professional supporting patient care, clinical and laboratory practice, and/or research. Case studies presented in lectorial and tutorial sessions draw from various disciplines within the School of Health and Biomedical Sciences and insights from industry partners

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Apply the principles of academic integrity to the acquisition of knowledge.
  2. Identify and demonstrate a range of communication skills, styles and digital literacy to enhance your collaboration and impact on relevant, diverse and culturally safe health practices 
  3. Describe the principles of professionalism, and inter-professional collaborative practice, in the context of the Australian healthcare system.
  4. Use ethical principles and professional standards of practice to make ethical decisions.
  5. Review the importance of discipline specific scope of practice and how it is applied in a professional setting.


Overview of Learning Activities

Students will learn through engaging with interprofessional and discipline-specific case studies in lectorial and tutorial sessions. Theoretical concepts supporting communication and professional practice will be covered in recorded lectures and self-directed learning activities involving all disciplines in the School of Health and Biomedical Sciences, incorporating insights from industry partners. The course employs a variety of learning activities, including lectorials, tutorial sessions, online resources, and self-directed learning. Students will work both individually and in teams, with a delivery format that combines face-to-face and online components. Recorded lectures/lectorials serve as the primary mode of information delivery, presenting key concepts, while tutorial sessions contextualise understanding to discipline-specific topics covered in the lectures.  

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through RMIT Student Website.
