Course Description

This course develops your capabilities in Advanced Robotics. You will build on prior knowledge of Automatic Control systems and examine the design of robotic systems. Topics which will be covered include, (but are not limited to):

Coordinate frame transformations, kinematic analysis of robot design, formulation of matrices to develop robot arm transforms, extraction of analytic joint angle solution equations from both forward and inverse kinematic matrices; planning trajectories in joint space to accomplish a task in global space, robotic vision, and offline programming.

If you are enrolled in this course as a component of your Bachelor Honours Program, your overall mark will contribute to the calculation of the weighted average mark (WAM).

Program Learning Outcomes

This course is an option course so it is not required to contribute to the development of program learning outcomes (PLOs) though it may assist your achievement of several PLOs for the following programs:

  • PLO1: Demonstrate an in-depth understanding and knowledge of fundamental engineering and scientific theories, principles and concepts and apply advanced technical knowledge in specialist domain of engineering. 
  • PLO2: Utilise mathematics and engineering fundamentals, software, tools and techniques to design engineering systems for complex engineering challenges.    
  • PLO4: Apply systematic problem solving, design methods and information and project management to propose and implement creative and sustainable solutions with intellectual independence and cultural sensitivity. 

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Apply foundation knowledge of automatic control system to analyse the design of robotic systems.
  2. Develop creative and innovative solutions to an advanced robotics problem and discuss the financial and social consequences of any intended action.
  3. Simulate and evaluate the motion of articulated objects using high level mathematical skills.
  4. Critically examine how robots identify objects and determine the position of the objects from camera images.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

It is vital that you keep up-to-date with all learning activities. Details of assignments will be posted via LMS (Canvas). There will also be milestones for your project which must be achieved by certain dates. Tutorial activities have been designed to enable you to achieve these milestones within the appropriate time frame.

This course is designed to use your present knowledge of robotics and elevate it to in-depth technical knowledge. Assessments have been designed to for you to apply established engineering methods to highly complex engineering solving.

The first and third assessments will test your written communication skills.

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through the Canvas Course Site.

Overview of Assessment

This course has no hurdle requirements.

Assessment 1:  Written report on (forward and inverse) kinematic analysis of robots.
Weighting: 30%
This assessment task supports CLOs 1 & 3

Assessment 2:  Written report on (forward and inverse) dynamic analysis of robots.
Weighting: 30%
This assessment task supports CLOs 1, 3 & 4

Assessment 3:  Written report on control, path planning, kinematics, and dynamics analysis of robots.
Weighting: 40%
This assessment task supports CLOs 1, 2, 3 & 4.
