Course Description
This course will continue your nursing knowledge and skills, drawing on the anatomy and physiology of all body systems introduced in previous courses. Evidence-based care for patients with a range of acute and chronic disease processes will be explored using the framework and direction of the Australian National Health Priority Areas. Knowledge of pathophysiological processes will be integrated to support the nursing care required to ensure efficient, effective, and person-centred care of patients. Strategies for risk reduction and early detection of disease processes will also be examined. Nursing skills in this course will be developed in the simulated health environment including the application of critical thinking and clinical reasoning.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course will contribute to Program Learning Outcomes for BP032P24 Bachelor of Nursing through the following learning outcomes:

On successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Examine and differentiate the pathophysiological processes leading to acute and chronic disease presentations.
- Assess and prioritise nursing care of patients experiencing health alterations due to acute and chronic disease processes.
- Research and interpret evidence-based management to medical surgical patients from diverse communities working with the interdisciplinary team.
- Demonstrate understanding of the nursing care of patients in the perioperative period.
- Analyse and integrate health preservation and preventative person-centred care strategies to support medical surgical patient and their support networks.
- Apply critical thinking, clinical reasoning and nursing skills required to respond to medical surgical patients with complex profiles including First Nations People and other under- represented groups.
Overview of Learning Activities
This course will use a range of learning activities including lectures, virtual and face to face lectorial, Simulation Based Education (SBE),, discussions and self-directed learning. Throughout the course you will be able to work both independently and in groups to aid development of your theoretical knowledge and its application to clinical practice whilst developing collaboration and communication skills in peer-based learning.
RMIT has state of the art simulated learning facilities for student learning and practice. You will participate in simulated practice within these facilities in preparation for placement. As a part of participation, you may be filmed for learning, teaching, reflection and assessment and this is considered an inherent part of our learning and teaching program. Recordings will be maintained in accordance with our assessment, document retention and privacy policies.
You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
