Course Description

This course is identified by RMIT University as a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience in which knowledge and skills will be practiced within the university simulated health environment, applied and assessed in a clinical workplace context, as feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your professional experiences.   

This course will provide students with the opportunity to apply the knowledge taught in medical surgical nursing, and pharmacology courses. Students will work in the multidisciplinary healthcare team to develop knowledge and skills in medical surgical care, including safe medication management and how nursing care is contextualised in the management of acute and chronic disease.    

An assessment requirement for this course requires students to complete clinical placement within a healthcare setting. To be eligible to undertake clinical placement, students must meet certain mandated documentation and immunisation requirements. Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course will contribute to Program Learning Outcomes for BP032P24 Bachelor of Nursing through the following learning outcomes: 

 

PLO1. Demonstrate a breadth and depth of nursing knowledge and concepts in a variety of real-world settings using an evidence-based approach

On successful completion of this course, you should be able to: 

  1. Apply culturally relevant, age specific patient care reflective of a 2nd year nursing student incorporating behaviours that reflect the Registered Nurse Standards for Practice and with reference to Code of Professional Conduct, Code of Ethics and other regulatory frameworks. 
  2. Undertake effective written, verbal and non-verbal communication, with patients, significant others, nursing staff and the multidisciplinary healthcare team.  
  3. Develop critical thinking and clinical reasoning in relation to health assessments, incorporating the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) standards and other appropriate frameworks. 
  4. Distinguish legislation for nursing practice to ensure quality, safety and ethical standards are upheld. 
  5. Describe the role of the Registered Nurse with emphasis on clinical reasoning and decision-making processes associated with a second-year scope of practice. 
  6. Demonstrate reflection and responsiveness to feedback regarding performance and behaviour incorporating resilience, adaptability, self-awareness and self-care as a 2nd year nursing student.  


Overview of Learning Activities

This course is a Work Integrated Learning course that will be conducted in the healthcare setting. Students will be required to undertake a minimum of 160 hours of supervised nursing practice in a designated healthcare setting under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. As support and preparation for this WIL experience there will be university-based clinical preparation time allocated throughout the semester as a timetabled learning experience. 

Students will actively participate in patient care within the university simulated health environments and as part of the health care team during all WIL experiences. 

This course will consist of 6 hours of lectorials and 8 hours simulation-based learning.     

Independent Learning: In line with the professional responsibility for active life-long learning you are expected to undertake self-directed learning activities during this time to develop and consolidate knowledge.  

The activities associated with this course are designed to enable students to build on theoretical learning from preceding and current semesters, consolidate and apply the clinical skills and knowledge in supported university and supervised clinical setting/s.  

RMIT has state of the art simulated learning facilities for student learning and practice. You will participate in simulated practice within these facilities in preparation for placement. As a part of participation, you may be filmed for learning, teaching, reflection and assessment and this is considered an inherent part of our learning and teaching program. Recordings will be maintained in accordance with our assessment, document retention and privacy policies. 

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course Site.

Overview of Assessment

All assessments are required to be completed for a pass mark in this course. This clinical course awards a pass or fail mark.  

This course contains hurdle requirements. All hurdle requirements for this course are indicated clearly in the assessment regime that follows, against the relevant assessment task(s) and all have been approved by the Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Learning Teaching & Quality).
