Course Description
This course is identified by RMIT University as a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience in which knowledge and skills will be practiced within the university simulated health environment, and applied and assessed in a clinical workplace context, as feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your professional experiences.
This course focuses on clinical learning that may be undertaken in either an acute or mental health context. Students will undertake supervised simulation-based learning opportunities within the simulated health environment and complete supervised professional placement/s in a prearranged health care setting for a prescribed period of time.
Students will work with a Registered Nurse in the healthcare team to continue building on nursing skills acquired in preceding and current semesters with the view to transitioning to a beginning practitioner.
Students will work towards providing nursing care for a number of residents/patients under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, developing independent and critical thinking skills required for time management and prioritisation of nursing care.
An assessment requirement for this course requires students to complete clinical placement within a healthcare setting. To be eligible to undertake clinical placement, students must meet certain mandated documentation and immunisation requirements. Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course will contribute to Program Learning Outcomes for BP032P24 Bachelor of Nursing through the following learning outcomes:

On successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Apply culturally relevant, age specific patient care reflective of Registered Nurse Standards for Practice within the scope of a 2nd year student nurse.
- Implement effective written, verbal and non-verbal communication, with patients, significant others, nursing staff and members of the healthcare team.
- Demonstrate critical thinking and clinical reasoning using evidence- based practice aligned with National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) standards to ensure optimal person-centred outcomes
- Apply legislation for safe nursing practice in relation to quality, safety and ethical standard, and evidence-based patient care.
- Distinguish the role of the Registered Nurse with emphasis on clinical reasoning and decision-making processes associated with a second-year scope of practice.
- Demonstrate reflection and responsiveness to feedback regarding performance and behaviour incorporating resilience, adaptability, self-awareness, and self –care as a 2nd year student nurse.
Overview of Learning Activities
This course is a Work Integrated Learning course that will be conducted in the healthcare setting. Students will be required to undertake a minimum of 160 hours of supervised nursing practice in a designated healthcare setting under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. As support and preparation for this WIL experience there will be university-based clinical preparation time allocated throughout the semester as a timetabled learning experience.
Students will actively participate in patient care within the university simulated health environments and as part of the health care team during all WIL experiences.
This course will consist of 6 hours of lectorials and 10 hours of simulated health practice, this includes 6 hours of immersive simulation-based learning that will include 4 hours of mental health specific simulation.
Independent Learning: In line with the professional responsibility for active life-long learning you are expected to undertake self-directed learning activities during this time to develop and consolidate knowledge obtained during the WIL experience.
The activities associated with this course are designed to enable students to build on theoretical learning from preceding and current semesters, consolidate and apply the clinical skills and knowledge in a supported university and supervised clinical setting/s.
RMIT has state of the art simulated learning facilities for student learning and practice. You will participate in simulated practice within these facilities in preparation for placement. As a part of participation, you may be filmed for learning, teaching, reflection and assessment and this is considered an inherent part of our learning and teaching program. Recordings will be maintained in accordance with our assessment, document retention and privacy policies.
You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
