Course Description

Pharmacy Practice C further develops the knowledge, behaviours and skills introduced in earlier Pharmacy Practice courses. In this course you will complete your studies of minor health conditions that present in community pharmacy, including the provision of Emergency Contraception.  

This course will develop your skills in applying the principles of Pharmaceutical Care to advise and assist individuals and healthcare providers in the management of complex and chronic disease states.  

This course includes a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in hospital pharmacy setting where feedback from industry and/ or community will be integral to your experience. You will reflect on your experiences during the placement to inform your own professional development.  

Work Integrated Learning: 

Students enrolled in this course will be required to undertake placement as part of the assessment of the course.  A number of requirements must be met by students to ensure eligibility for placement.  Further details on each of these are available in Part B of the Course Guide and on MyRMIT.

There is no flexibility with these requirements.  It is your responsibility to ensure THESE REQUIREMENTS ARE COMPLETED.  Any student who has not provided this information will not be able to attend placement and will receive a fail grade for the placement course.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:  

  1. Demonstrate the application of relevant policies, legislation, guidelines and standards to your pharmacy practice
  2. Apply principles of Chronic Disease State Management, using knowledge of health literacy and health psychology to optimise patient outcomes.  
  3. Assess and accurately dispense prescriptions, ensuring the Quality Use of Medicines through appropriate patient counselling 
  4. Assess individuals presenting with minor health conditions and recommending appropriate over-the-counter management strategies.  
  5. Evaluate the role of pharmacist in hospital healthcare teams.


Overview of Learning Activities

 

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both. 

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
