Course Description
In this course, you will learn about the social, cultural and environmental determinants of health and their impact on under-represented and diverse groups. You will learn principles of safe and high quality health care delivery, and cultural intelligence and safety in all aspects of health care practice. You will also learn how contemporary society and its culture and historical context contributes to health care problems experienced by under-represented and diverse groups.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the program learning outcomes for BP154VRI23 Bachelor of Psychology:
PLO1 Apply breadth and depth of psychology theories, concepts and evidence in various real-world settings using a scientific approach.
PLO4 Communicate to diverse audiences utilising contemporary and traditional formats and employing professional integrity, inclusivity and culturally-safe practices
PLO5 Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for professional decisions and resolve challenges through application of critical thinking and reflective practice, autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team
PLO6 Collaborate and contribute as an effective team member in diverse settings with commitment to First Nations and/or globally-inclusive perspectives.
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Compare and explain the social, cultural and environmental determinants of health; with a focus on underrepresented and diverse groups.
- Describe, compare and explain health status across local and global populations with reference to underrepresented and diverse groups including First Nations Peoples of Australia.
- Identify historical and cultural factors which contribute to the context of health care problems;
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity in several aspects of health practices and culturally appropriate research when it involves vulnerable populations;
- Describe the impact of contemporary society and culture on the health of vulnerable populations
- Identify key health issues that underrepresented and diverse groups may experience in 21st century Australia and Vietnam.
Overview of Learning Activities
This course will use a range of learning activities including lectures, and tutorial sessions, online resources and self-directed learning. Throughout the course you will work both individually and in teams. Delivery will be a mix of face to face and online.
Recorded lectures are the principal mode of information delivery and will present you with the key concepts. Lectorial sessions will contextualise your understanding of topics covered in the recorded lectures.
You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through RMIT Student Website.
