Course Description

This course introduces you to the concepts in transnational thinking in relation to the field of cultural production. You will develop skills and knowledge applicable to contemporary cultural production including: 

  • theories of transnationalism, migration and mobilities, and diaspora; 
  • intercultural competencies and communication skills for developing partnerships and collaborative projects; 
  • the role of art and creative practices in cultural diplomacy, cultural tourism, and policy frameworks; 
  • and new models for the circulation of culture (i.e.: artist residencies, digital curation, and touring). 

You will explore critical debates and multiple perspectives within contemporary creative art practices and identify key examples of creative production relevant to the development of your own project.  

Ultimately, the course will assist you to develop your independent judgement and capacity to articulate a cohesive argument/rationale for your ethical, critical and creative decisions in practice.  

The course supports professional learning and career development learning in fields and roles such as: arts management, creative practice, arts and cultural festivals, creative industries, cultural heritage, cultural tourism, public art, and arts education industries; as well as artists, curators, cultural producers, education and community workers. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This is a School of Art Masters Suite Program Option Course. 

If you are doing this course as part of the Graduate Certificate in Creative and Cultural Production, this course contributes to the following program learning outcomes: 

  • Critically reflect on diverse approaches to cultural production in cultural, community and institutional scenarios, including First Peoples contexts. 
  • Engage and collaborate respectfully with diverse stakeholders, both locally and globally, to innovate, create and problem solve in a range of social and cultural contexts. 
  • Employ professional and interpersonal skills, including the creative use of digital strategies to effectively and responsibly negotiate and communicate.


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to: 

  1. Critically evaluate a range of transnational methodologies in relation to the field of cultural production.
  2. Design approaches to working with diverse cultural communities in community and institutional contexts.
  3. Articulate your subject position within cultural and social frameworks through the application of your learnings to the planning and/or creation of a cultural production project. 


Overview of Learning Activities

Through lectures, workshops, tutorials, reading groups, critiques, and discussions you will explore critical debates and multiple perspectives within contemporary creative arts and media, and identify key examples of creative practice.  

Delivery will be a combination of intensive face-to-face and online classes.  

Learning activities and assessments may involve individual or group work.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1: Mapping a Cultural Community, 20% (Map and 500 words or equivalent presentation), CLO1 

Assessment Task 2: Project Proposal with Case Study, 35% (2000 words or equivalent presentation), CLO2, CLO3  

Assessment Task 3: Project Presentation Report, 45% (2500 words or equivalent presentation) CLO1, CLO2, CLO3
