Course Description
Designing for the Senses is an interdisciplinary course that focuses on designing products, environments, and experiences that engage with the senses. The course introduces you to the principles and practices of sensory design, including the use of sound, light, texture, aroma, and taste to create meaningful and memorable experiences. You will explore the relationship between the senses and human behaviour and learn how to use this knowledge to design products and experiences that meet the needs and desires of users. Through a range of practical exercises and projects, you will develop their skills in sensory design, including ideation, prototyping, and user testing.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Critically appraise the principles and practices of sensory design and their relevance to human behaviour.
- Appreciate the role of the senses in product, spatial and experience design through various modes of design analysis and representation.
- Develop and implement sensory design strategies that engage users and meet their needs and desires.
- Apply a range of sensory design techniques, including sound, light, texture, aroma, and taste, to create meaningful and memorable experiences.
- Use ideation, prototyping, and user testing to create effective and engaging sensory designs.
Overview of Learning Activities
In this face-to-face course, you will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as: lectures, class discussions and critiques, analysis of theoretical content, and reading materials, and practical exercises performed in groups and individually. You will be challenged to develop your analytical and as well as creative abilities in this elective.
In addition to scheduled classes you will need to complete course readings and assignments in your own time.
You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectures, tutorials, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Assessment for this course will be based on a combination of individual and group work and will include:
Assessment tasks
Assignment 1: Sensory Analysis Report (30%) CLO 1
Assignment 2: Sensory Design Project (40%) CLO 1, 2, 3, 4
Assignment 3: Design journal (30%) CLO 1,2,3,4,5
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
