Required Prior Study
LANG1401 French 6 is open to students who have successfully completed LANG1250/LANG1402 French 5 or who have completed Year 12 French.
Students who have had approximately 210 hours of French tuition in another institution and have reached an upper intermediate to advanced level (B1/B2 on the CEFR*) may be allowed to enrol in the course but only after a placement test. (Please contact the course coordinator to organise this.)
Please note that enrolments may be refused on the basis of previous French study or abilities, and students may be instructed to vary their enrolment in accordance with RMIT’s Enrolment Processes.

Course Description
French 6 is the sixth of eight consecutive course in French offered at RMIT University and will be delivered n French.
In this course you will continue studying aspects of French grammar and language at a higher level, as well as studying and debating course material on the Francophone world (literary extracts, films and documentaries). You will be practising speaking, listening, writing and reading in French in different registers, reflecting on their relevance in different socio-cultural contexts, as well as learn and reflect on Francophone cultures and their global relevance.

Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Communicate fluently and confidently in both oral and written French in a wide range of contexts
- Communicate effectively using a variety of registers in the French language appropriately in different contexts
- Analyse and critically debate some topical social issues in contemporary French speaking cultures in French
- Analyse and discuss a range of authentic spoken, written and multimedia materials in French, including film and multimedia
- Apply a wide range of language learning strategies you have acquired, and demonstrate independent learning
- Critically examine and debate areas of cultural values and norms in French speaking countries and contrast them with the Australian context
Overview of Learning Activities
A variety of structured in class (online via Collaborate Ultra) exercises provide opportunities to develop your French expression in all?skills and critical thinking whilst acquiring new cultural knowledge.
Multimedia teaching and learning resources, and readings relating to sociolinguistics and cross-cultural communication issues will be introduced and discussed.
You will be expected to participate actively in many pair and group activities and to use only French. Therefore, regular online class attendance (via Collaborate Ultra) is important to support your learning.
Overview of Learning Resources
You may need to purchase a prescribed text and a recommended language dictionary. Multimedia teaching and learning resources and tools will also be used, and made available through our online systems.
