Course Description
This unit specifies the workplace performance required for an entry level worker to participate in work health and safety (WHS) processes in the workplace in order to ensure their own health and safety at work as well as that of others in the workplace who may be affected by their actions

Details of Learning Activities
Facilitator led class on safety in the workplace: legal aspects, risks management, safe work practices and emergency procedures workplace via Power Point presentation and classroom discussion and small group activity.
Topic 1: The legislative & organisational framework for WHS: The laws, regulations & codes of practice and Legal requirements in the workplace.
What is workplace safety?
Laws, regulations & codes of practice.
Legal requirements in the workplace.
Topic 2: Risk management : The difference between hazard, risk and residual risk.
Near misses and accidents. Risk Assessment .
Risk (hierarchy of ) control. Reporting.
Risk management (The Take 5 approach).
Topic 3: Safe workplace practices: Housekeeping.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Managing stress and fatigue.
Manual handling. Ergonomics.
Handling chemicals.
Infection control (introduction).

Topic 4: Emergency procedures: Evacuation procedures.

Clinical experience in he student’s workplace.
Self managed research of their workplace, completion of the oral presentation (via Power Point)due Block 2 day 2) , including student induction sheet and third party evidence. During the oral presentations students gain information of WHS issues in other dental practices.
Students to complete and submit Reflection Feedback of Oral presentations.
Teaching Schedule
Block 1 Day 3: 14:00 - 17:00 (3 hours)
Three-hour facilitator led classroom based lecture program via Power Point presentation, classroom discussion and small group activities on the role of the dental assistant in the dental practice at the front desk. Students are explained how to access the HLTWHS200A from myRMIT Studies (BlackBoard) and students commence and complete the oral presentation between Block 1 and Block 2.
Topic 1: The legislative & organisational framework for WHS: What is workplace safety? The laws, regulations & codes of practice and Legal requirements in the workplace.
Topic 2: Risk management : The differences between hazard,risk and residual risk, near misses and accidents , risk assessment , risk (hierarchy of ) control, reporting and risk management (The Take 5 approach).
Topic 3: Safe workplace practices: Housekeeping , personal protective equipment (PPE) , managing stress and fatigue , manual handling , ergonomics , handling chemicals, infection control (introduction), radiation, and safety signs.
Topic 4: Emergency procedures:
Evacuation procedures, fire, medical emergencies and first aid, bomb threats and natural disasters.
Block 1 Day 4: 09:00 - 11:00 (2 hours)
Safe work practices in the dental surgery
Two hour facilitator led workshop, on safe work practices in the dental surgery, including with class discussion and small group activities. The HLTWHS200A Worksheet is collected.
Block 2, Day 2 Students present their oral presentations: 09:00 - 13:00 (4 hours) Students to present their oral presentations, listen to other students oral presentations and complete & submit Reflection Feedback of Oral presentations.

The oral presentation, student induction checklist and the third party evidence document are aligned directly with the desired learning outcomes of this unit of competency and as such will provide students with study direction and focus in work based training.
