Course Description

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to select, locate, install and test liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage facilities with a storage capacity of up to 500 litres; install either single or multiple cylinders; and test associated piping systems.
The storage is connected to consumer piping systems with operating pressures not exceeding 200kPa.

Performance Criteria:

1.1Design, drawings, specifications and any special instructions are obtained.
1.2Work health and safety (WHS) and environmental requirements associated with the installation of LPG storage facilities are adhered to throughout the work.
1.3Quality assurance requirements for company operations are identified and adhered to.
1.4Gas load and design requirements are determined from plans, specifications, and job drawing or workplace instructions.
1.5Storage capacity is checked for compliance with regulatory authority and installation requirements.
1.6Type of storage is determined according to job and installation requirements.
1.7Cylinder and type of system (one or two-stage) are selected according to standards, job and installation requirements.
1.8Appropriate regulators are determined to meet capacity and load of the system according to installation requirements.
1.9Appropriateness of selected location to provide the required service is established in compliance with standards and installation requirements.
1.10Quantity of materials required is calculated from design, drawings and specifications in compliance with installation requirements.
2.1Materials and equipment are ordered and checked for compliance with docket and order form, and for acceptable condition.
2.2Appropriate tools and equipment for storage facility installation, including personal protective equipment, are identified, selected and checked for serviceability.
2.3Appropriate testing apparatus is selected.
2.4Work is planned in conjunction with others involved in or affected by the work.
2.5Work area and materials are prepared to support efficient installation of the system.
3.1Cylinder supports and base, piping, fittings and components are selected in compliance with standards and installation requirements.
3.2Size and method of connection are selected in compliance with standards and installation requirements.
3.3Cylinder valve is purged according to standards.
3.4System from cylinder outlet is tested, purged and regulator adjusted to be gas-tight, in compliance with regulatory authority and installation requirements.
3.5Test data is recorded in format required by regulatory authority and installation requirements.
3.6Sustainability principles and concepts are applied to work process.
4.1Work area is cleared and materials disposed of, reused or recycled according to legislation, regulations, codes of practice and job specification.
4.2Tools and equipment are cleaned, checked, maintained and stored according to manufacturer recommendations and workplace procedures.
4.3Information is accessed and documentation completed according to installation requirements.

Assessment may incorporate a variety of methods including written/oral activities and demonstration of practical skills to the relevant industry standards. Participants are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment activities to their teacher/assessor. Feedback will be provided throughout the course.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment 1- Submit workbook underpinning questions and completed Swms (weighting 30%)

Assessment 2- Practical installationof tasks 60, 61. (weighting 70%)

To successfully complete this unit, a student needs to be deemed competent (CA grade) in both assessment tasks.
