Course Description
In this course you will learn the skills and knowledge required to provide oral hygiene information and instruction to patients to promote and support effective home care oral health practices.

Instruct patient in appropriate tooth brushing techniques and the use of any additional oral hygiene aids. 2.5. Provide feedback to patient on the demonstration of oral hygiene instruction skills. 2.6. Reinforce to patient the importance of regular oral health checks with a practitioner. |

Select and discuss a range of dental chemotherapeutic products that address specific conditions including hypersensitivity and gingival inflammation. 4.4. Seek clarification from practitioner regarding chemotherapeutic product options when required. |

Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge and understanding of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises, oral presentations, and through the application of learned skills and insights to your written tasks. Assessment Tasks
Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency.

To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard.

The unit HLTDEN028 - Provide effective oral hygiene instruction to patients with an oral health treatment plan has 3 assessments that you must complete successfully to be deemed competent for this unit.
Assessment 1 - AT1 Knowledge
Is a knowledge assessment, the first of three tasks that students are required to complete successfully to be deemed competent for this unit. It will allow students to demonstrate their knowledge relevant to Provide effective oral hygiene instruction to patients with an oral health treatment plan. Students are required to undertake research and provide response to the questions.
For this assessment students will be asked to answer 18 short answer questions which relate to the knowledge requirements for the unit Provide effective oral hygiene instruction to patients with an oral health treatment plan. The questions cover:
- Basic anatomy and physiology of oral health, including what is considered healthy and unhealthy
- Behaviour and habits which contribute to oral health issues
- Fluoride Guidelines
- Causes and prevention of tooth decay, gum disease and tooth wear
- Effective self-care practices for oral health
- Factors that impact oral health
- Susceptible tooth surfaces
- Role of saliva in caries risk
- Healthy eating and drinking recommendations
- Special needs of patients
- Identifying appropriate toothbrushes
Assessment 2 - AT2 Role plays (two patients) and knowledge questions
This task is the second of three assessments that you need to complete satisfactorily for this unit. You are required to demonstrate your knowledge of and ability to provide effective oral hygiene instruction to two (2) patients based on their oral health treatment plan, one patient has special needs and the other has either a fixed or removable orthodontic appliance.
This assessment is conducted in 2 parts

Part 1: You are required to responds to ten (10) short answer questions to assess your underpinning knowledge of the:
- Limitations in providing instruction or information to patients with complex dental or medical needs
- Limitations in providing instruction or information relating to high-risk chemotherapeutic agents.
- Risks associated with poor oral hygiene habits
- Chemotherapeutic product(s) that support the oral health care needs of a patient with specific conditions
- Part 2: Simulated role play -in this part of the task you will pair with another student and take turn to play the role of a Dental Assistant and provide oral hygiene instructions to TWO patients to address their oral health care needs. One patient will have special needs and the other has either a fixed or removable orthodontic appliance. For this role play your assessor will adopt the role of the dental practitioner.
Assessment 3 - AT3 Role play and Demonstration
This practical assessment is the last out of three required occasions you must show evidence of your ability to demonstrate effective oral hygiene instruction for a patient with an oral health treatment plan. It has two parts.
Part 1: A role play with the assessor where you will provide oral hygiene instruction for a patient with an oral health treatment plan.
Part 2: Identifying correct fluoride products and chemotherapeutic agents and demonstrate dispensing correct amount of toothpaste on to a toothbrush.
