Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to work with teams and individuals, their standard of conduct and the initiative they take in influencing others. At this level, work will normally be carried out within routine and non routine methods and procedures which require the exercise of some discretion and judgement.  No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.

Frontline management provides the first level of leadership within the organisation. This unit applies to people who are making the transition from being a team member, to taking responsibility for the work and performance of others.

Frontline managers have a strong influence on the work culture, values and ethics of the teams they supervise. As such it is important that frontline managers model good practice, professionalism and confidently represent their organisation.

Details of Learning Activities

Students are required to attend all classes to complete activities and in class assessments. For most of the semester each student will work in a team. The class activities provide an opportunity to develop skills and apply theory to real life situations. The learning activities may include:

Overview of Assessment

Assessment may incorporate a variety of methods including technical requirements documentation, homework, assignments, group and/or individual projects, in class exercises, written and practical assessments, problem solving exercises, presentations, direct observation of actual and simulated work practice, presentation of a portfolio of evidence which may comprise documents, and/or photographs and/or video and audio files, review of products produced through work-based or course activities.

Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met. Students will be provided with feedback throughout the course to check their progress.

Assessment Tasks

Portfolio of evidence

During the course of the semester, you will collect evidence of competency against the elements for this unit.  The portfolio will consist of completed in-class and out-of-class activities together with responses to case studies and scenarios.  (Please refer to the Portfolio guide on the RMIT Learning Hub). In addition, your facilitator will provide third party reports of your performance while you take part in a simulated workplace activity (a major project) which will link all units in your program.

Final assessment

You will prepare a business report for a specific organisation (approximately 2000 words [+/- 10%]).  In this report, you will identify an opportunity for this organisation to enhance its image in the local community.  The organisation can be one with which you are familiar or one you have researched.  The opportunity to enhance the organisation’s image may have arisen as a result of entry into new markets, relocation to a new area, development of new products, activities by competitors or initiatives by government or industry bodies. (Please refer to your student text for further details about this report.)

Submission Requirements

All assignments must be submitted via Blackboard unless held in class

You should:

• Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks. (hard copy and soft copy)
• When you submit work for assessment at RMIT University you need to use a cover sheet that includes a declaration and statement of authorship. You must complete, sign and submit a cover sheet with all work you submit for assessment, whether individual or group work. On the cover sheet you declare that the work you are presenting for assessment is your own work. An assignment cover sheet for submission of work for assessment is available on blackboard.

Marking Guide (competency):

Vocational Education and Training (VET) is based on current industry needs and the focus on preparing you for the workplace. Because VET courses are informed by practical application of knowledge and skills, they are based on a system known as ‘competency based training’ (CBT). So when you are assessed in VET it is about whether you are competent to do the job, as well as having a firm grasp on the knowledge and skills required to do that job, as opposed to traditional curriculum based education settings that are often based on knowledge retention.

You need to demonstrate you are competent in each element of the unit of competency you are studying.

You will receive feedback on each assessment task that will inform you whether you are competent or not and how well you are performing. Once competent in all elements of the unit you receive a competency grading.

Marking Guide (Grading)

After achieving competency we then grade your performance in the unit; this gives you the opportunity to have the level of your performance formally recognized against industry standards and employability skills.

The grading is according to the following criteria:


We are looking for a high level of ability to complete all tasks independently as per the specifications as well as demonstrating a high level of initiative in your approach to leadership


We are looking for depth of understanding of the key concepts and knowledge required in leading people. You should be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of all applicable leadership principles in all the assessment tasks.


We are looking for appropriate use of technology to assist in presenting all tasks clearly and suitable for the intended audience. You also need to show an understanding of the kinds of problems that can arise in leading workplace people and teams and how these might be addressed.


We expect to see ongoing uploading of information that is relevant to the unit, full utilisation of Blackboard as per course requirements and timely submission of all required assessment tasks.


We expect to see contributions to relevant discussions and scheduled collaborate sessions. In addition your tasks should demonstrate a very good understanding of strategies for a collaborative approach to leadership in the workplace.
