Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify and work within the legal and ethical frameworks that apply to an individual job role.

This unit applies to community services and health workers who play a proactive role in identifying and meeting their legal and ethical responsibilities.

Details of Learning Activities

Classes where information is shared through talks and discussions, and workshops where exercises are conducted to apply learning. Time is spent during classes and workshops for students to work on group and individual assessment tasks.

 Legal requirements in AOD and community services generally.

  • History of legal considerations in AOD and community services.
  • Sources of information about legal requirements eg: Acts, policies, procedures, worksafe, fair work, privacy and confidentiality, duty of care and dignity of risk etc.
  • Scope of role and legal considerations
  • Identifying potential breaches of legal requirements
  • How to respond to potential and actual breaches of legal requirements, reporting requirements, internal and external.

 Week 2

 

Ethical responsibilities in AOD and community services.

 
  • History of ethical considerations in AOD and com servs.
  • Sources of information about ethical requirements eg: code of conduct, code of ethical practice, human rights conventions
  • Scope of role and ethical considerations
  • Identifying potential breaches of ethical requirements.
  • How to respond to potential and actual breaches of ethical requirements, reporting ethical breaches, internal and external
  • Own personal values and attitudes and how to support non-judgemental practice

 Contributing to a legal and ethical workplace

  • Identifying room for improvement
