Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to support individuals or a group of individuals participating in group physiotherapy programs designed to restore optimum movement and functional independence.
This unit applies to allied health assistants and should be performed under the direction and supervision (direct, indirect or remote) of an allied health professional.

1. Prepare for mobility and movement program

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Interpret program requirements and confirm against the prescribed information provided by the physiotherapist 1.2 Determine the client's availability, according to the organisation's protocols 1.3 Gather necessary equipment for the mobility and movement program 1.4 Prepare the setting for the mobility and movement program 1.5 Obtain consent from the client before commencing the mobility and movement program

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Assist with exercise program according to the instruction of treating physiotherapist 2.2 Confirm client's understanding of exercise program based on treatment plan prepared by the physiotherapist 2.3 Guide the client to complete the program according to prescribed treatment plan 2.4 Provide the client with sufficient time, opportunity and encouragement to practice existing and newly developed skills 2.5 Encourage the client to take advantage of planned and unplanned opportunities to integrate skills developed within the program into normal daily activities 2.6 Provide feedback to the client to reinforce understanding and the correct application of the exercise program 2.7 Monitor the client during and after the program according to the prescribed treatment plan 2.8 Identify the need for modifications to the exercise program and report to the treating physiotherapist 2.9 Recognise when client becomes distressed, in pain or communicates their desire to slow down, change activity or stop and follow stepping down procedures outlined in treatment plan or organisation guidelines and report to the treating physiotherapist 2.10 Take appropriate and prompt action in response to any indicators of adverse reaction to the program or treatment according to relevant protocols and guidelines and report to the treating physiotherapist

  • Face-to-face &/or online lectures to cover theoretical and practical concepts for each topic in the course
  • Students will learn to apply their skills and knowledge to work integrated learning (WIL) in the student & clinical practice environment, during simulations and classroom based learning
  • Observation and perfromance of skills in the workplace will be a valuable part of your learning experienc.
  • Tutorial activities (individually and in teams) to discuss, debate, critique and consolidate your ideas and extend your understanding around key concepts within specific topics
  • Utilise and develop critical research and cognitive skills to find credible sources of health information
  • Self-directed study time (eg. readings or activities around theory) to enhance and strengthen your knowledge and understanding of theoretical concepts
  • To further facilitate learning students are strongly encouraged to use a range of communication tools between themselves and their course instructor as well as between themselves and fellow students by using the online learning platform

Overview of Assessment

 

You must demonstrate Performance and Knowledge Evidence of the unit in order to be deemed competent.
Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks.

Assessment Task 1: Short answer questions

Assessment Task 2: Practical assessment

Assesment Task 3: Clinical Placement

Primary assessment involves on-going practical and applied assessment in a clinical workplace or simulated environment such as Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement activity.

Competency based training requires you to be in attendance in order for assessment to be undertaken.

You will be required to attend clinical placement as a part of the assessment and qualification requirement for this program.

AT 1 & AT2 Knowledge Asessment Tasks in Week 13 and Week 24 respectively.

AT3 Practical  Demonstraion of skills assisting a patient to perfom bed exercises in week 16

AT4 Practical demonstration of skills assisting a patint to ascend and descend stairs in week 21

AT 5 Clinical placement logbook submission
