Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan, prepare and implement group activities to meet individual client outcomes.
This unit applies to allied health assistants and should be performed under the direction and supervision (direct, indirect or remote) of an allied health professional.

1.1 Obtain information about the purpose of the group sessions from an allied health professional and the desired individual client outcomes 1.2 Identify requirements outside scope of role and responsibilities as defined by the organisation and discuss with allied health professional 1.3 Identify and confirm impact of the program's contribution to the clients' overall care plan 1.4 Determine client availability according to organisation protocols 1.5 Determine client appropriateness according to client profile

Introduction to groups

Plan and implement groups.

Week 1 will provide an introduction to groups and the different types of groups you may facilitate as an Allied Heatlh Assistant. Key learning objectives will include:

1. To be able to assist in the development of group sessions

2. To be able to plan & conduct a group session

 

Group skills 1: Understanding Group Dynamics

Group Skills 2:  Factors that Influence groups and communication.

Group Skills 3: Group Roles

Week 2 will look at factors that influence group dynamics, and your role in guiding these. Key learning objectives will include:

1. To be able to identify the characteristics and nature of a group.

2. To understand group dynamics and behaviour and how leaders/facilitators can use these group dynamics for group progression.

3. To understand the skills needed to communicate effectively within a group.

4. To begin to understand how to manage group conflict.

Week 3 will assist you to develop skills in group facilitation. Key learning objectives will include:

1. Group communication to encourage participation.

2. To be able to identify and manage potential conflict within groups.

3. To be able to monitor individual client progress within a group setting and provide feedback to group members.

Group 2 - Self Directed Learning: Organisational Requirements

 

Week 4 and 5 will entail self-directed learning and AT2 class presentations.  

This self-directed session will address the organisational requirements relevant to conducting group sessions.

  • AT1 - Written assessment- Due week 6
  • AT2 - Part 1 - Plan a group program (session plans) Due week 3.
  • AT2 - Part 2 - Conduct a group session presentation Due weeks 4 & 5.
  • AT2 - Part 3 - Written session review and SOAP note - Due week 5.
  • AT3 - Placement logbook reflection - to be completed after placement.

Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency. To be assessed as Competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills at a standard expected in the workplace.  

To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.
