Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide basic assistance to an allied health professional.
This unit applies to allied health assistants working in a health or community context. Depending on the setting, work may include following treatment plans for therapeutic interventions and/or conducting programs under the regular (direct, indirect or remote) supervision of an allied health professional.

This course includes a Work Integrated Learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will
be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and
where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience.
This course includes clinical placement.

2.1 Confirm and discuss therapy and treatment plans and programs with supervising allied health professional 2.2 Obtain information from relevant sources according to organisation policies and supervising allied health professional 2.3 Check resources and equipment required for therapy program to ensure suitability and working order 2.4 Recognise and minimise environmental hazards in accordance with organisation requirements 2.5 Prepare the client for therapy under direction of supervising allied health professional

The critical learning for this course takes place in the elective courses of this program and clinical placement within the health sector.

You will be instructed in skills through demonstration, modelling and role­play. Skills development is supported by lectures on theory.

Details of Learning Activities

A combination of activities will support students learning in this course, such as:


- Face to face and or online lectures to cover theoretical and practical concepts for each topic in the course
- Students will learn to apply their skills and knowledge to work integrated learning (WIL), during simulations and classroom based learning
- Observations of performance in the clinical placement or simulated environment will be a valuable part of your learning experience
- Tutorial activities (individually and in teams) to discuss, debate, critique and consolidate your ideas and extend your understanding around key concepts within specific topics
- Online discussion and activities support you to collaborate with other students in your course and debate and debate and discuss ideas
- Self directed study time to enhance and strengthen your knowledge and understanding of theoretical concepts
- To further facilitate learning, students are strongly encouraged to use a range of communication tools between themselves and their course instructor as well as between themselves and fellow students by using the online learning platform
