Course Description

This unit of competency applies to the preparation, cutting and sewing of custom-made shoe components, including stuff cutting, making or modification of lasts, making of soles, sole and heel units, and insoles.

Discretion and judgement may be required, for both self and others, in planning and selecting processes, procedures or outcomes.

The unit of competency applies to workplace activities associated with producing custom-made shoes and the degree of complexity will relate to leather and other materials being used and intricacy of design.

Check the last and any build-up components, and make adjustments and refinements, if necessary, in line with design requirements and established production standards

Learning Outcomes


n successful completion of this course you will have developed and applied the skills and knowledge required to demonstrate competency in the above elements.

In this unit students will develop knowledge and skills associated with planning and organising for safe and effective use of custom footwear construction technology and operations. This unit also requires an ability to check the quality of outcomes and identify and address problems relating to own work. Initiative and enterprise and problem solving will be used to combine a range of materials and processes to achieve desired design outcomes.

This is a Vocational Education and Training qualification and is assessed for Competency. To be assessed as Competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills at a standard required in the workplace. To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.

Assessment Tasks

Task 1

Summary and Purpose of Assessment

This short-answer assessment task is one of four assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent for this cluster. 

This assessment task allows you to demonstrate your knowledge required to:

  • Develop patterns for custom-made footwear
  • Measure, cut and sew custom-made shoe components
  • Assemble and finish custom-made shoes


Assessment Instructions

What

  • You must satisfactorily answer all 50 questions
  • You should answer all questions in the spaces provided, using full sentences, word count and dot points when requested
  • All work must be your own

 

Where

This is an online assessment task. You will need to answer all questions on CANVAS.

 

How

The knowledge assessment is accessed through the Canvas shell and you must complete and submit your responses within the allocated assessment timeframe.

 

If you are not able to attend the scheduled assessment timeframe you need to advise your teacher so that an alternative assessment arrangement can be made. This knowledge assessment is an individual assessment task that must be completed with minimal support from your supervisor (allowed support includes further explanation of the task requirements or explanation of assessment criteria etc).

Task 2


Summary and Purpose of Assessment

This practical assessment task is the second of four assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent for this cluster. 

 

This practical assessment will allow you to demonstrate your ability to develop patterns for custom-made footwear designs for a full range of leathers and other appropriate textiles and materials.

 

Assessment Instructions

 

What

There are 3 parts to this task, you will be required to complete:

Part 1: Prepare to make patterns for custom-made footwear

Part 2: Develop patterns for custom-made footwear

Part 3: Test pattern

 

You are required to choose patterns to suit specifications and measurements, or develop new patterns, to suit specifications on a minimum of 3 occasions.

 

You will need to modify, check and test each of the 3 patterns according to selected materials, shoe style and specific client requirements.

This assessment will be conducted in the footwear workshop.

How

You will be assessed against the criteria as listed in the observation checklist in Section B of this task and how well you answer the questions asked by your assessor. To achieve a satisfactory result, you will need to address all criteria satisfactorily.


Task 3

Summary and Purpose of Assessment

This practical assessment task is the third of four assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent for this cluster. 

 

This practical assessment will allow you to demonstrate your ability to measure, cut and sew custom-made shoe components.

What

There are 6 parts to this task, you will be required to complete:

Part 1: Confirm custom-made footwear requirements

Part 2: Prepare shoe last   

Part 3: Prepare and make components

Part 4: Cut or click leather

Part 5: Prepare and make the upper             

Part 6: Conduct final quality check for operations      


You are required to measure, cut and sew the custom-made shoe components, for at least 3 Pairs shoes, in accordance with work requirements.

  • Finalised custom-made Prototype (2 Pairs)
  • Finished custom-made (1 Pair)

Where

This assessment will be conducted in the footwear workshop.

How

You will be assessed against the criteria as listed in the observation checklist in Section B of this task and how well you answer the questions asked by your assessor. To achieve a satisfactory result, you will need to address all criteria satisfactorily.


Task 4


Summary and Purpose of Assessment

This practical assessment task is the final of four assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent for this cluster. 

 

This practical assessment will allow you to demonstrate your ability to assemble and finish custom-made shoes.

 

Assessment Instructions

 

What

There are 4 parts to this task, you will be required to complete:

Part 1: Perform preparatory work on shoe   

Part 2: Last the shoe

Part 3: Assemble the shoe

Part 4: Finish shoe

 

You are required to assemble at least 3 pairs of shoes using the appropriate construction techniques in accordance with work requirements.

  • Finalised custom-made Prototype (2 Pairs)
  • Finished custom-made (1 Pair)

This assessment will be conducted in the footwear workshop.

How

You will be assessed against the criteria as listed in the observation checklist in Section B of this task and how well you answer the questions asked by your assessor. To achieve a satisfactory result, you will need to address all criteria satisfactorily.
