Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to identify different perspectives on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples’ cultures, develop an understanding of the local and broader cultural contexts, and use the identified information to embed culturally appropriate experiences, interactions, behaviours and physical environments into daily practice with children. 

This unit applies to educators who work in regulated children’s education and care services or schools in Australia, including those who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and educators from other cultural backgrounds. 

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice. 

 

Assessment for this course includes Knowledge questions task, a practical task, a research task and a, and attendance at Work placement

3.3. Develop and communicate ideas to promote children’s understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples’ cultures and languages through collaboration with others in culturally safe and sensitive ways.

4.1. Facilitate children’s experiences in meaningful and culturally appropriate ways that model respect, values and positively portray Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples’ cultures and languages.

4.3. Develop an understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait peoples’ ways of learning.

Learning Outcomes


On successful completion of this course you will have developed and applied the skills and knowledge required to demonstrate competency in indentifying perspectives and local contexts in and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples' cultures. Also, in contributing ideas for embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples' culture into daily life and in supporting children's understanding and respect.


Details of Learning Activities

This unit is part of Certificate IV in School Based Education Support. You will study this unit with several other units on the same day. Your program consists of face to face teaching, Unsupervised Directed Study and you are required to participate in compulsory work placement. It is strongly advised you attend all sessions in order to engage in the required learning activities, ensuring the maximum opportunity to gain the competency. You are not required to attend to complete Unsupervised Directed Study, however you are expected to complete the work given and will at times be required to show evidence the work has been completed. Your Unsupervised Directed Study will be posted on Canvas. 

Your learning experience will involve class-based teaching, discussion, demonstration and practical exercises. 

It is required that you attend all timetabled sessions. You must attend a minimum of 80% of all classes in order to successfully complete each unit. 


 The student learning experience will be facilitated through participation in a range of activities that include: 
• Work Placement
• Group discussion 
• Research assignments
• Guest speakers
• Oral and/or written questions on "What if?" scenarios
• Realistic simulations and role play
• Practical demonstrations and direct observation of actual work and simulated work practice
• Oral Presentations
• Individual and group projects - Completing the projects will include negotiated independent study time and practical work relevant to the unit of competency.

This unit will be delivered weekly.

Overview of Assessment

In this unit you must demonstrate the specified performance and knowledge evidence to achieve competence in this unit. Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks.  

 

You may be assessed by:  

• Oral or written questioning  
• Oral presentations 
• Assignments and projects  
• Direct observation of actual work practice  
• Presentation of a portfolio of evidence which may comprise documents, and/or    photographs and/or video and audio files  
• Work-based activities  
• Third-party feedback from a work supervisor/employer

Assessment tasks in this unit are assessed using the following competency based results:

All Assessment tasks should be submitted by the due date. If an extension is required please contact your teacher and/or Coordinator before the due date.
You must complete a submission cover sheet for every piece of submitted work.
All assessment tasks including electronically recorded student work will be kept by the University for student feedback and to meet government requirements.
Resubmissions:
If you are found to be Not Yet Competent in a Course Assessment Task you may be allowed one resubmission only. Your teacher will provide feedback regarding what you need to do to improve and will set a new deadline for the resubmission.
