Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to research the viability of ideas for business opportunities and develop and present proposals for viable options in formats suiting a range of stakeholders.

The unit applies to those establishing or operating a business providing self-employment, as well as those establishing a new venture as part of a larger organisation. The proposals may relate to products and/or services offered by the business.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Details of Learning Activities

This course is a 'clustered' course combining Research and develop business plans (BSBESB401) and Develop and present business proposals (BSBESB302).

Students will participate in weekly lectures/tutorials and workshops to research, develop and present a business proposal based on their nominated new business venture.

Your knowledge and understanding of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises, oral/written presentations and through the application of learned skills and insights. AT2A: Research and evaluate business ideas

For this task, you will play the role of Henry Thomas to research and evaluate business ideas for viability. You will record outcomes using provided template.

Before you start completing this task, you will need to:

  • Read the email provided by Gavin Stead to understand the current situation. Then, download email attachments:

- BSBESB302 SD Business Viability Assessment Procedure

- BSBESB302 SD Business Viability Checklist Template.

  • Access CBSA Intranet to read and apply the following Policy and Procedure:

- IM009 Risk Management Policy and Procedure

  • Read provided BSBESB302 SD Business Viability Assessment Procedure to understand workplace procedure for assessing viability and financial returns.

To complete this task, you must undertake the following steps:

  1. Identify two business ideas relating to product or service opportunities. Do this by completing a SWOT Analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats).
  2. Research and identify at least six key factors that influence the financial viability of business ideas. Do this by identifying factors that must be explored as per BSBESB302 SD Business Viability Assessment Procedure.
  3. Evaluate the two business ideas to explore and determine the viability of the business opportunity. Do this by completing a PEST Analysis (Political, Economic, Social-Cultural and Technological).
  4. Explore personal commitments, and own skills profile against the skills required for the two business ideas. Do this by completing a skills assessment. Note visit the following website for details about business skills and assessment:

*Important: You are playing the role of an Operations Manager; therefore, you may complete the assessment in terms of typical skills for such as role. However, you can also incorporate your own personal skills and commitments into the analysis.

  1. Complete a Risk Assessment concerning the two business ideas. Do this by:
  • applying Risk Assessment Matrix as per IM009 Risk Management Policy and Procedure
  • identifying at least three potential risks associated with ideas and viability
  • assessing each risk in terms of the likelihood (frequency) of it occurring and the consequence (impact).

**You will further explore the area of risk management during Part B role-play as you will assess risk, develop controls and review methods.

  1. Complete all sections of the BSBESB302 SD Business Viability Checklist Template in relation to each of the above areas. Then, submit the template to your assessor.

 

AT2B Manage risks associated with the business idea

For this task, you will play the role of Henry Thomas to participate in a role-play to communicate identified risks associated with your business idea. You will also assist stakeholders in developing risk management systems. Before you start completing this task, you will need to complete the following:

  • Read the email provided by Gavin Stead to understand the current situation.
  • Retain a copy of your completed BSBESB302 SD Business Viability Checklist Template as you must bring this template to the meeting.
  • Access the CBSA Intranet to read IM009 Risk Management Policy and Procedure as this document will be discussed during the meeting.

To complete this task, you must participate in a role-play meeting.

Your assessor will play the role of Gavin Stead, and a fellow student will play the role of Glenda Williams.

During the role-play you will be required to answer verbal questions on the following topics:

  • risks identified in relation to your business idea
  • risk management systems (assessment, control and review).

You must take notes about risk management systems using the Checklist-Template’s notes section and submit the template to your assessor.

During the role-play, your assessor will be looking to see that you can demonstrate the following:

1.     Recognise potential risks connected to business ideas and viability.

2.     Communicate with stakeholders about the potential risks.

3.     Help stakeholders create risk management systems.

4.     Record meeting notes.

AT2C Develop a proposal for a viable business idea

For this task, you will play the role of Henry Thomas to develop a proposal for a viable business idea (product or service). Your proposal will include establishing a budget and descriptions of the product or services using provided templates. Before completing this task, you must finalise the following:

  • Read the email provided by Gavin Stead to understand the current situation. Then, download email attachments:

- BSBESB302 SD Budget Template

  • Access the TM001 CBSA Email Template (available via the CBSA website.
  • Access the BSBESB302 SD Business Viability Checklist Template (as retained from Parts A and B) and notes from the meeting (as retained from Part B). You will use the information to develop your proposal.

To complete this task, you must follow the steps below:

1. Identify the audience for the proposal.

Recognise CBSA stakeholders as the audience:

  • Write the proposal clearly and concisely using suitable business-like language
  • Identify that the proposal will be used to make business decisions and therefore must be informative.
  • Ensure the template is followed to make sure structure and content needs are met.

2. Complete all sections of the BSBESB302 SD Budget Template. Do this by providing numeric data about each of the following areas:

  • Income
  • COGS (Cost of Goods Sold)
  • Expenses (fixed and variable)
  • Totals (income, expenses)
  • Total Net Income

3. Complete all sections of the BSBESB302 SD Business Proposal Template to ensure workplace requirements for structure and content are met. Do this by giving consideration to your audience and providing information under each heading as follows:

  • Title Page
  • Table of Content
  • Executive Summary
  • Identified Problem or Need
  • Proposed Solution (description of product/service)
  • Personal Skills and Commitments
  • Pricing Options
  • Areas of legislation, regulation, code of practice

4. Write an email to Gavin Stead by completing all sections of provided email template. Specify the proposal and budget as attachments and request that Gavin confirms documents meet workplace requirements.

 

AT2D Present the business proposal

For this task, you will play the role of Henry Thomas to present your developed business proposal using a suitable form and method. You will seek feedback from stakeholders about the proposal.

Follow the steps below to complete this part:

  • Read the email provided by Gavin Stead to understand the current situation.
  • Access the developed BSBESB302 SD Business Proposal Template and BSBESB302 SD Budget Template (as retained from Part C) to inform your presentation.
  • Decide on a digital presentation method and form to suit audience needs, for example, Microsoft PowerPoint. Speak with your assessor about available technologies.
  • Ensure presentation is individually developed and customised to meet audience needs.
  • Develop five questions to ask stakeholders to elicit feedback about the presentation.
  • Present your business proposal to CBSA stakeholders as per Gavin’s email.
  • Submit a copy of your presentation and stakeholder feedback notes to your assessor.

During the presentation, your assessor will be looking to see that you can demonstrate the following:

1.     Determine a presentation method suitable for the audience.

2.     Provide a presentation customised to the target audience.

3.     Ask for feedback to inform future proposals.

4.     At the conclusion of the discussion, you record all stakeholder feedback to inform future presentations.
