Course Description

In this course you will develop  the skills and knowledge required to create storyboards for different digital content, including video, film, animation and interactive media.

The course applies to those who break down content, stories or scripts into discrete elements and visualise creative concepts in collaboration with a creative production team. Depending on the type and scale of production, storyboard artists, designers, producers and information architects may create storyboards. In some industry environments, they may work closely with directors, producers and in a team.

1.1 Clarify storyboard requirements for production in consultation with required personnel

1.2 Identify factors that affect the nature and type of storyboard to be created

1.3 Contribute ideas in pre-production meetings and refine storyboard requirements

1.4 Research and select storyboard tools that meet production requirements

1.5 Obtain sign-off of on type of storyboard to be created from required personnel

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Break down content, scripts and stories into frames using storyboarding techniques, tools and methods according to production and safety requirements

2.2 Specify storyboard elements for each frame and reflect creative concepts

2.3 Specify linear or non-linear frame sequence and show connection between each frame according to production requirements

2.4 Provide descriptions for each frame

2.5 Discuss work in progress with required personnel, seeking feedback and assistance and adjust as required

2.6 Confirm draft storyboards adhere to production requirements

This course consists of 2 Units of Competency that are clustered together for delivery and assessment. The other unit of competency in this clustered course is: CUAANM301 Create 2D digital animations

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge and understanding of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises, oral presentations and through the application of learned skills and insights to your written tasks. Full assessment briefs will be provided and can be found on CANVAS. 


Assessment Tasks

Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency.  To be assessed competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills at a standard expected in the workplace. To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.

Assessment 01: Animation and storyboard basics

In this assessment, you will research and explore storyboarding and animation basics, as well as demonstrate an understanding of the safe ergonomic practice and digital integrity.

Assessment 02: Storyboard and animation Project 1

In this assessment, you will research, plan, and refine storyboards according to an animation brief. 

Due Week 11

Assessment 03: Storyboard and animation Project 2

Building on your skills from Assessment 2, you will research, plan, and refine storyboards according to an animation brief.
