Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to work in partnership with a person and their family, carer or others identified by the person to recognise and report the risk of falls.

1. Recognise potential risk of falls.

Performance Criteria:

1.1. Consult with supervisor and the person to ascertain lifestyle, health and mobility factors that might increase the risk of falls for the person.

1.2. Provide opportunities for the person and their family, carer or others identified by the person to contribute and ask questions.

1.3. Establish needs, issues and concerns of the person which are outside scope of own practice and refer to supervisor or health professional according to organisational policies and procedures.

1.4. Recognise physical indicators of risk of falls and document according to organisational policies and procedures.

1.5. Recognise environmental factors that may contribute to falls and document according to organisational policies and procedures.

Performance Criteria:

2.1. Report risk of falls to supervisor or health professional according to organisational policies and procedures and in accordance with legal and ethical considerations.

2.2. Maintain the privacy and dignity of the person when reporting risk of falls.

2.3. Complete and store documentation and reports according to organisation policies and procedures and update according to changes in the person’s circumstances.

Details of Learning Activities

A combination of activities will support students learning in this course, such as:

• Face to face and or online lectures to cover theoretical and practical concepts for each topic in the course

• Students will learn to apply their skills and knowledge to work integrated learning (WIL), during simulations and classroom based learning

• Observations of performance in the workplace and industry placement or simulated environment will be a valuable part of your learning experience

• Tutorial activities (individually and in teams) to discuss, debate, critique and consolidate your ideas and extend your understanding around key concepts within specific topics

• Online discussion and activities support you to collaborate with other students in your course and debate and debate and discuss ideas

• Self directed study time to enhance and strengthen your knowledge and understanding of theoretical concepts

• To further facilitate learning, students are strongly encouraged to use a range of communication tools between themselves and their course instructor as well as between themselves and fellow students by using the online learning platform

Assessment Tasks

The assessments tasks will involve -

  • AT1 - Written Assessment - Due in week 10
  • AT2 - Practical Activity/Role-Play  - Due week 9 (Students allocated a time slot starting in week 5)
  • AT3 - Placement Evidence Log - Due 3 weeks after placement
  • You must be deemed satisfactory in all assessment tasks to be graded competent for this course.

Extensions of time for submission of assessable work:

If you are prevented from submitting an assessment on time by circumstances outside your control you may apply for an extension of up to seven (7) calendar days in writing (email) to your Program Coordinator one working day BEFORE the due date.
