Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge needed to access and integrate foundation skills resources, strategies and advice in vocational training and assessment.

The unit applies to vocational education and training (VET) teachers, trainers and assessors who use a range of technical and training competencies to support the foundation skill needs of learners and candidates in vocational training and assessment. Foundation skills include the core skills and employability skills described by current authorised Australian foundation skill frameworks. Core skills include digital literacy, learning, reading, writing, oral communication, and numeracy skills. Employability skills include skills such as initiative and enterprise, planning and organising, problem solving, self-management, and teamwork.

This unit does not include the competencies used by experienced VET teachers, trainers and assessors to lead the development of foundation skill support.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Details of Learning Activities

Learning activities activities include discussions, quizzes, peer presentations, small group work, online research tasks, simulations and creating workplace documents. These activities and the participant manual form a core component of the course and the relevant activities will need to be completed prior to the live session each week.

Activity 1: Explore the foundation skills of the unit BSBCMM411.

Learning topics

Customise resources to support foundation skills

Review foundation skill strategies used.

Participants complete TAELLN422 Task 01:  Qs 7a and 8a, where they prepare drafts of foundation skill strategies they will use (Q7a) and customise one (1) resource for use.

Before the next class:

Participants get feedback on their draft instructional strategies and customised resources prepared for TAELLN422 Task 01, Part B, Qs 7a and 8a

 

Week 9 16 - 22 September

Participants will act on the feedback received on their draft instructional strategies and customised resources prepared for TAELLN422 Task 01, Part B, Qs 7a and 8a and prepare the final version of the learning resource and training plan.

PART II: Put it all together 

  • Introduce TAELLN422 Task 01 Part B and (time permitting) allow participants to begin working on it.

 

  • Explain Assessment Task 2 and its requirements.
  • It is recommended that learners discuss their preferred options. Please discuss this with them and consider their input.
  •   (option 1) train and assess learners using the foundation skill resources, strategies and advice gathered in TAELLN422 Task 01, or

    –     (option 2) train and assess a different competency-based* vocational topic relevant to your industry or area of expertise, using foundation skill resources, strategies and advice gathered elsewhere.

  • Students are required to record their training and assessment session as outlined in Assessment Task 2.

Performance Evidence

The individual must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • use foundation skill resources, strategies and advice to meet identified foundation skill support needs in vocational training and assessment as follows:
  • accessing and using foundation skill resources in training at least once
  • accessing and using foundation skill training strategies in training at least once
  • seeking and acting on foundation skill advice from a colleague with skills, knowledge and experience in foundation skills at least once during training or assessment.

Knowledge Evidence

The individual must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • organisational procedures relating to using foundation skill resources, strategies and advice, including:
  • accessing foundation skill resources
  • working with experienced colleagues with skills, knowledge and experience in foundation skills
  • sources of foundation skill resources, strategies and advice
  • techniques to collaborate with sources of foundation skill support
  • features of good practice resources that address learner foundation skill support needs in vocational education and training
  • features of good practice training and assessment strategies that address:
  • requirements of nationally recognised training products

Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency. To be assessed as Competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills at a standard expected in the workplace.   

To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.
