Course Description
This unit covers the installation or upgrading of equipment in television studios. The scope varies from installing or upgrading a single piece of equipment to installation of a whole studio or facility.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to install or upgrade facilities and/or equipment in broadcast environments including fixed and flyaway situations. Within the context of a three camera studio and a portable or flyaway OB (outside broadcast) rig you will learn to identify the components of the system, how they are interconnected, set them up for operation in a variety of situations and use test equipment to monitor the correct operation and transmission of the various signals. Students are expected to bring the capabilities developed in Vision mix Television productions and Operate Vision Systems as well as Team work and OH & S from the Certificate IV in Audiovisual Technology.
Students will develop complementary capabilities in the Units Shoot a wide range of television productions and Develop vision systems installation plans.
Details of Learning Activities
In class activities will include a range of
• teacher directed group activities/projects
• class exercises to review discussions/lectures
• independent project based work
• online research
• group discussion
Out-of-class activities include completion of individual design and pre-production work, preparation for class presentations and location excursions.
The scheduled classes are followed by a series of productions on and off campus which include School of Media & Communication awards night in May, Open Day in August, SPAVIS collaboration with Sound Production program in June or September and ‘Splendour’ production (date TBA)

Overview of Assessment
Following flow diagrams and manuals install a piece of equipment into the broadcast system and as part of a team undertake an installation and upgrade while maintaining transmission.
Assessment Tasks
You must submit all pieces of assessment in order for your competency to be assessed in this course..
Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered as essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment tasks. Summative assessment tasks in this unit are graded.

To demonstrate competency in this course, you will need to complete each one of the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback on all assessments and a grade for the summative assessment.
You will be assessed using the following methods:
Formative Assessment
•Demonstrate the ability to install and/or upgrade one of a selection of pieces of broadcast equipment for ENG ‘News rounds. Due in weeks 4 to 7.
•Set up the flyaway rack and cameras as part of a team. Due week 11/12
Summative Assessment
•Conduct a ‘live’ install as part of a team to upgrade transmission from SD to HD with minimal disruption to signal. Due week 11 or 12 during semester 1.
•Carry out part of the installation of one or more of the broadcast rigs established for EFP Shoots, The School Awards Night (May), Open day (August), ‘SPAVIS’ and/or ‘Kaleide’ (July-October). Assessment to be conducted on the dates of these events, some of which will be advised via Blackboard as they are scheduled.
