Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge you will require to construct a single crown, or a combination of two or more crowns known as a bridge. - used to replace a natural tooth. The crown and bridges that you construct are designed to restore function in harmony with the patients natural dentition. All procedures must be carried out in accordance with occupational health and safety policies and procedures, current infection control guidelines, Australian and New Zealand Standards, State/Territory legislative requirements and organisation policy.

1. Prepare removable stone die

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Pour-up die stone horseshoe
1.2 Grind base of die stone to appropriate height and with level occlusal plane
1.3 Trim away undercuts from base of die stone model
1.4 Prepare die model for dowel pin and base in accordance with manufacturer's instructions

2.1 Prepare materials to duplicate models in accordance with manufacturer's instructions
2.2 Mix stones, die-stones and refractories in accordance with manufacturer instructions
2.3 Produce an accurate, bubble free duplicate model

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Wax up crown and bridge restorations
3.2 Sprue crown and bridge wax pattern and prepare for investing
3.3 Select appropriate investment material according to the alloy to be used
3.4 Prepare investment material according to the manufacturer's instructions
3.5 Invest wax patterns

4. Burnout, cast and finish alloy fixed partial dentures and structures

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Select burnout techniques appropriate to the investment material and alloy
4.2 Cast metal restorations in appropriate alloy
4.3 Devest metal restoration without damaging casting
4.4 Check the casting for defects
4.5 Trim and polish metal restoration while maintaining all contact areas and margins
4.6 Evaluate the finished restoration
4.7 Decontaminate the casting according to infection control guidelines
4.8 Dry the casting, replace on model and place in a sealed container for dispatch


Learning Outcomes


On completion of this course you will be able to demonstrate, on a consistent basis, the construction of a range of different cast metal crowns and bridges in technique metal (gold). The course will develop your skills of crown and bridge construction with a focus on anatomy and harmony with the patients natural dentition (teeth).

Teaching Schedule

The class is scheduled for delivery to the APPRENTICE group (DT3) on Tuesday March 24 (Fixed Bridge Construction) & Thursday March 26 (Investment Materials and Casting Defects) in the Lecture theatre of Building 154 RMIT (within the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne) Notification will be provided via student email if the date or location change.

The class is scheduled for delivery to the NON-APPRENTICE group (FT2) on Tuesday May 19 (Fixed Bridge Construction) & Wednesday May 20 (Investment Materials and Casting Defects) in the Lecture theatre of Building 154 RMIT (within the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne) Notification will be provided via student email if the date or location change.

Following the delivery of the theory class, practical exercises will be undertaken in the laboratory.

Class schedules are detailed in the timetables provided on Blackboard (subject to change at the discrection of RMIT, in this event notification will be provided to your student email);

  1. DT3 - Monday - Friday (2week block)
  2. FT2 - Tuesday - Thursday


Practical classes will be delivered in the simulated environment at RMIT where the Teacher will provide demonstration and assistance as you construct the following appliances.

  • please note; ’real’ gold is not used at RMIT

The TIER 2 exercises are made available if you complete all of the previous exercises and are seeking further practice prior to the assessments. The time guides for the TIER 2 exercises are reduced and require a ’self-managed approach’ to complete the exercise.

You will be assessed in a simulated workplace and under the normal range of work conditions.

You will be assessed on both the essential knowledge and the demonstration of essential skills through;

Completion of practical exercises - including detailed self reflection of each exercise
Practical exam
Theory exam


 


Assessment Tasks

You will attempt the following practical exercises under supervision of the teacher and you will be graded with either a Px (Satisfactory) or NYC (Not Satisfactory) according to the assessment guidelines outlined in the practical exercise book; in accordance with the training package elements & essential skills.

  1. Accutrac models

  1. TIER 2 - Full Gold Crown

Upon completion of an exercise and prior to submission for assessment, all exercises undertaken in the practical classes will require you to provide a detailed reflection of your own work focussing on areas of the appliance that were successful as well as areas that could be improved upon next time.

The two practical exams will take place under supervision in the simulated working environment at RMIT. The exam will take place under exam conditions and you will be given details of the requirements and assessment guidelines in the practical book available in class and on BlackBoard.

  1. PRAC EXAM (1) - Full Gold Crown
  2. PRAC EXAM (2) - Full Gold Crown (both crowns are to be constructed at the same time - prac exam (1) & (2))

The two theory exams will be conducted under supervision at RMIT under exam conditions.

  1. Fixed Bridge Construction - Theoretical examination - pass mark 60%
  2. Investment Materials and Casting Defects - Theoretical examination - pass mark 60%


Assessment Matrix

To achieve a grade of CA (Competency Achieved) for the unit HLTDT510C/DENT5262C Construct crown and bridge structures you are required to obtain a pass result (PX or CA) for the following theoretical and practical assessments that are used to measure; elements, performance criteria, essential knowledge and essential skills as outlined in the health training package.

  1. PRAC EXAM (1) - Full Gold Crown
  2. PRAC EXAM (2) - Full Gold Crown (both crowns are to be constructed at the same time - prac exam (1) & (2))
     
  3. Fixed Bridge Construction - Theoretical examination - pass mark 60%
  4. Investment Materials and Casting Defects - Theoretical examination - pass mark 60%
     

Failure to complete any of the above listed tasks/assessments will result in an NYC (not yet competent) result for unit HLTDT510C/DENT5262C Construct crown and bridge structures. An NYC (not yet competent) result will be entered in the student record. This will result in non-completion of this unit of competence requiring re-enrolment incurring fees and a return to class work and completion of any relevant assessments at the time of the re-enrolment.

The scheduled dates for the assessments are as follows;

Apprentice DT3: Tuesday October 13th (Fixed Bridge Construction & Investment Materials theory & Prac exams) (The assessment process must be finalised and a result entered by November 27th 2015)

Non-Apprentice FT2: Wednesday October 21st (Fixed Bridge Construction & Investment Materials theory & Prac exams) (The assessment process must be finalised and a result entered by November 27th 2015)

Non completion or non-submission of compulsory tasks:

Failure to complete any or all of the compulsory tasks listed above will prevent the student from achieving a CA (competency achieved) result for unit HLTDT510C/DENT5262C Construct crown and bridge structures. This will result in the student not completing the unit successfully. NYC (not yet competent) will be recorded and re enrolment will be required to continue the unit/program. Fees will be incurred. Please note: A second opportunity for assessment will not be granted unless the student has applied for and been granted special consideration as per RMIT assessment policy.


Assessment Appeal Process:

Students are required to support the learning outcomes this Unit with work based experience and/ or further self managed research to support positive outcomes in this Unit.


To undertake practical exercises and /or assessment students MUST present for the assessment process as follows:

Please note these are also WH&S requirements for laboratory safety.

In appropriate practical class attire (Protective clothing for legs - if shorts, must cover knees, lab coat, safety glasses)
Fully covered in leather(not suede) footwear

Hair to be contained by tying back or in appropriate hair cover.
No artificial fingernails to be worn
The wearing of henna is acceptable.
Short, clean fingernails (no nail polish)
No jewellery to be worn on the hands or wrists. Wedding rings or jewellery that cannot be removed for cultural reasons must be taped with an appropriate waterproof tape
All cuts/ skin abrasions on the hands or wrists must be covered with a waterproof dressing

A student that is non-compliant with any of the above requirements will not be permitted to undertake practical exercises or assessment at the scheduled time. The student will be rescheduled to undertake assessment at a later date.
