Course Description

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to conduct global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) surveys for both data collection and engineering set outs, as related to an engineering/construction environment. It requires the ability to interpret and analyse information and apply technical skills. Functions would be carried out within organisational guidelines.

1. Prepare for the survey.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Key activities and timelines are scheduled with full consideration of the specifications and available resources.

1.2 Organisational GNSS survey requirements are identified, complied with and recorded.
1.3 Equipment is prepared for the survey with consideration of the specific project parameters and requirements.
1.4 Existing survey control data is obtained and validated.
1.5 Set out data is collated, validated, manipulated as required, and uploaded into the GNSS receiver.
1.6 Designated staff responsibilities are communicated to relevant personnel to ensure clarity of understanding of the work and provide a basis for ongoing assessment.

Performance Criteria:

2.1 GNSS equipment is operated according to manufacturer specifications and organisational guidelines.

2.2 GNSS survey is related to a reference system based on survey requirements.
2.3 GNSS data is collected using methodologies detailed in the data collection plan according to specifications.
2.4 OHS requirements are planned for and adhered to.
2.5 Quality assurance processes are adhered to according to organisational guidelines.

3.1 Appropriate software is used to process the data according to organisational guidelines to determine required information.
3.2 Validation checks are completed according to project specifications.
3.3 Discrepancies between specifications and the actual data collected are identified and evaluated.

The total number of scheduled hours of teaching, learning and assessment involved in this course includes all planned activities (face to face classes, lectures, workshops and seminars; workplace visits, online learning and other forms of structured teaching and learning). It also covers the amount of effort necessary to undertake, evaluate and complete all assessment requirements, observation of work performance, discussions with supervisors and others providing third party evidence and one on one and group assessment sessions with students.

Overview of Assessment

The assessment is conducted in both theoretical and practical aspects of the course according to the performance criteria set in the National Training Package. Assessment may incorporate a variety of methods including written/oral activities and demonstration of practical skills to the relevant industry standards. Late Submission:

If you require an Extension of Submittable Work (assignments, reports or project work etc.) for seven calendar days or less (from the original due date) and have valid reasons, you must complete an Application for Extension of Submittable Work (7 Calendar Days or less) form and lodge it with the Senior Educator/ Program Manager.
The application must be lodged no later than one working day before the official due date. You will be notified within no more than two working days of the date of lodgement as to whether the extension has been granted.
