Course Description
In this course you will develop the skills and knowledge required to better understand client groups and the issues that impact on their lives. This understanding will enable you to function independently and to plan and undertake community work and associated services. You will focus on the broad social and cultural context in which work is planned and implemented in the community services industry.
This unit is taught in a cluster with:
CHCYTH005 - Develop and implement procedures to enable young people to address their needs
CHCYTH008 - Support young people to take collective action
CHCYTH009 - Support youth programs
CHCYTH011 - Work effectively with young people and their families
CHCYTH012 - Manage service response to young people in crisis
Students complete 120 hours of work placement undertaking youth work practice to support the learning and assessment tasks for these units.

Assessment Tasks
Assessment Task 1: For this assessment task you are required to apply your knowledge to youth work. You will need to consider what is involved in youth work and how to apply the knowledge when working as a youth worker.
Assessment Task 2: The purpose of this assessment is for you to demonstrate your understanding of policy frameworks and key issues facing young people and youth workers.
Assessment Task 3: This assessment task is to demonstrate your skills and knowledge to identify youth organisations and the support services they are providing to the target group.
Assessment Task 4: In this assessment you will play the role of the youth worker to solve the dilemma presented by undertaking a role play
Assessment Task 5: The purpose of this assessment is to devise, coordinate, deliver and evaluate an event/program. You will document the outcomes in a report covering your research, crisis response framework plan and evaluation.
Assessment Task 6: This is a practical assessment which will take place in the workplace. You will also be required to answer ten (10) questions following the practical task. The purpose of this assessment is to support young people in decision making and participation. You will apply youth work practices to encourage and support young people in undertaking action to resolve issues of concern.
Assessment Task 7: This Task is to provide an opportunity for the student to conduct research and reflect on their placement experience and identify areas for improvement. Use the information from your research and placement experience to complete this task.
Assesment Task 8: RMIT assessor will undertake this observation at student’s placement organisation. Student and Assessor will negotiate a date for conducting the observations. After conducting the Observation, the assessor will complete the checklist including the feedback and upload to CANVAS. This observation check list is evidence of students’ ability to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required in a workplace environment. Assessor also will need to complete a checklist for each of the placement undertaken by the student. If the student is unable to demonstrate any of the skills/ knowledge in the workplace, then student will demonstrate competency skills in a simulated environment
Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency. To be assessed as Competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills to a standard expected in the workplace. To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.
