Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to apply a range of techniques to produce technical drawings that meet required standards and conventions.
It applies to individuals who use technical drawings in various contexts.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

 explain current standards and conventions for technical drawing
 describe work health and safety requirements for preparation of technical drawing materials and equipment.


Details of Learning Activities

Learning activities will take place in a studio, workshop or classroom using industry standard tools and resources. You will complete exercises and industry style projects. You will also be required to undertake independent study.

Standard sheet sizes. Title blocks. Architectural lettering. How to understand scale. Line weights. Graphic symbols, reference symbols and abbreviations for; doors, windows, walls, construction materials, fittings, furniture, lighting, electrical, dimensioning. North symbol.

Using architectural symbols and conventions draft a copy of the sheet provided onto A3 cartridge paper in pencil.

What is a plan, an elevation and section? How to layout a page. Reference symbols. Drawing titles. Cross referencing drawings. Dimensions.

Project 2: Residential House Plan:

Plan to be converted to 1:50 scale. Draft a floor plan and one elevation of the house provided onto A3 cartridge paper in pencil. Include complete kitchen and bathroom layouts using architectural symbols and conventions. Plan and elevation to be traced onto tracing paper in ink using correct line weights. Due: Week 14

Overview of Assessment

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:
 equipment and materials required to produce technical drawings
 documented technical drawing requirements
 workplace documentation
 relevant people.
Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment will consist of thee technical drawings projects:Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment tasks. Summative assessment tasks in this course are graded. Feedback throughout the course may be written, verbal or a combination of both. To demonstrate competency in this course you need to complete each one of the following pieces of assessment to a satisfactory standard.

Task 1: An exercise in which you will demonstrate skills and knowledge in drafting conventions - Due Week 11

Task 2: A technical drawing of a residential house plan - Due Week 14

Task 3: Technical drawings of a residential bathroom - Due Week 16
