Course Description

This course covers the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to use web authoring tools to create, modify and test simple web pages and websites.

1. Identify authoring requirements

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Select preferred web authoring tool according to client requirements
1.2 Set preferences for the web authoring tool, including site file transfer protocol client


2. Create and save files

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Create files and save in correct location or directory
2.2 Navigate the web authoring tool environment or workspace
2.3 Access and use a range of features in the web authoring tool
2.4 Maintain suitable directory structure for the site
2.5 Save in appropriate directory structure
2.6 Upload files to appropriate folder on the server


3. Add content to web pages

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Insert and format text content according to client requirements
3.2 Insert images , data tables and simple forms
3.3 Access markup language and make basic modifications to code


4. Create simple navigation

Performance Criteria:

4.1 Create a site map to plan navigation
4.2 Create links between pages to reflect content structure using both text and images


5. Test website

Performance Criteria:

5.1 Test elements of website content across a number of different browsers and browser versions to ensure consistency of presentation and performance
5.2 Test that website meets client requirements

Students will work with at least three computer applications to their full capacity employing all advanced features and import/export capacities for efficiency and productivity purposes, using at least two industry-recognised application packages.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment may incorporate a variety of methods including technical requirements documentation, homework, assignments, group and/or individual projects, in class exercises, written and practical assessments, problem solving exercises, presentations, direct observation of actual and simulated work practice, presentation of a portfolio of evidence which may comprise documents, and/or photographs and/or video and audio files, review of products produced through work-based or course activities.

Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met. Students will be provided with feedback throughout the course to check their progress.

Students are required to complete 3 tasks. All tasks must successfully be completed to be deemed competent in this unit.

Assessment Task 1 Requirements Presentation (Due in class Week 5)
In pairs, students will find or be given a real client who needs a basic website for a business or product. Students are then to produce a detailed requirements report to be delivered in class. This presentation will cover the business needs and appropriate recommendations for a new website. The report should detail a client brief, substantial research and analysis as to the market and competitor sites, functionality requirements, hosting and domain name recommendations, a site map, software tool recommendations and project timelines incorporating scope for user feedback and site testing.

Assessment Task 2 Website (Due in class Week 13)
Working in the same pairs, the second assessment will focus on students’ ability to create a valid basic website based on the above requirements report. This project will involve a range of research and technical tasks to be completed using various software tools and computer applications.

Assessment Task 3 User Testing (Due in class Week 15)
Individually students will user test a site of another class member. You will need to examine how the website meets design and functionality specifications, site navigation and functionality, plus branding and copywriting.
