Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use a text editor to design, create and save web pages to a given specification, rather than using an authoring tool.

It applies to individuals working as web designers and developers who interpret client briefs, generate a framework for internet information, and are resourceful in their application of technology in using a markup language.

Overview of Assessment

In order to achieve competency in this unit, you must provide:

Performance Evidence

 Evidence of the ability to:    

  • design, create and save a document using a markup language, without using an automated code generation program
  • use a text editor for generating the markup language code for use on common web browsers
  • validate the markup document against the standards set by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). 

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, you must:    

  • recognise and outline the use of markup languages including:
    • dynamic hypertext markup language (DHTML)
    • hypertext markup language (HTML)
    • standard generalised markup language (SGML)
    • virtual reality modelling language (VRML)
    • extensible hypertext markup language (XHTML)
    • extensible markup language (XML)
  • identify and describe, standards applicable to a markup language
  • summarise the range of available web browsers and their accessibility
  • identify and describe, the issues of accessibility.  

Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the website technologies field of work, and include access to:

  • an organisational style guide or policy
  • all user requirements
  • a text editor
  • a range of browsers
  • the internet, to validate the markup.

You are advised that you are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate your assessment work to your teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions.  You are encouraged to ask and answer questions during class time and online sessions so that you can obtain feedback on your understanding of the concepts and issues being discussed. Finally, you can email or arrange an appointment with your teacher to gain more feedback on your progress.

Assessment Tasks

Please note the following two units:

COSC7367C (ICTWEB506)  - Develop complex cascading style sheets

and

COSC7366C (ICTWEB411) - Produce basic client-side script for dynamic web pages

are clustered and therefore co-delivered and co-assessed holistically.

Assessment  Tasks

You are required to complete two assessments. 

You must successfully complete all sections of each assessment tasks to be deemed competent in this unit.

 

Assessment 1 - Individual Website Project

 

This assessment contains three parts. You are required to complete part 1 and 2 at the due date and continue working on the project and submit the final (part 3) at the nominate due date. For this assessment, you are required to design, develop and test a dynamic four-page website using the latest standards in HTML, CSS and JavaScript, based on client requirements.  Your Website will be uploaded to a Web hosting server, tested against W3 standards and in different browsers.

 

Part 1 – HTML: Requirements Analysis, Design, Develop and Test (Due date: Refer to Teaching Schedule)
 
Design documents including a storyboard that outlines the project website pages. HTML code with all html structural elements, e.g. head, body, sections. All HTML pages must be validated against W3 standards and testing documentation submitted.

 

Part 2 – CSS: Design, Develop and Test (Due date: Refer to Teaching Schedule)

 

All HTML website pages must be styled with CSS accordingly to the initial design and client requirements. All CSS file(s) must be validated and testing documentation submitted.

 

 

Part 3 - JavaScript and Final Submission: Design, Develop and Test  (Due date: Refer to Teaching Schedule)


A four-page website with a menu, text, images, table and forms styled with CSS. The Website must contain JavaScript functions to validate the html form. The website is required to be uploaded to a Web server, and detailed testing documentation is to be submitted.

 

 

Assessment 2 - Knowledge Review (Due date: Refer to Teaching Schedule)

 

For this assessment task, you are required to complete a set of online in-class open-book quiz test within the test time allowed.

Submission Requirements

Assessment tasks need to be submitted via Canvas.

You should:

  • Ensure that you submit assessments on or before the due date. 
  • Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks (hard copy and soft copy).
  • When you submit work for assessment at RMIT University you need to use a cover sheet that includes a declaration and statement of authorship.  You must complete, sign and submit a cover sheet with all work you submit for assessment, whether individual or group work.  On the cover sheet you declare that the work you are presenting for assessment is your own work.  An assignment cover sheet for submission of work for assessment is available on Canvas.

Late Submission Procedures

You are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates.

If you are prevented from submitting an assessment item on time, by circumstances outside your control, you may apply in advance to your teacher for an extension to the due date of up to seven calendar days.

Re-submissions (VET Programs)

If you are found to be unsuccessful in a Course Assessment Task you will be allowed one re-submission only.  Your teacher will provide feedback regarding what you need to do to improve and will set a new deadline for the re-submission.  The highest grade you will receive if your re-submission is successful is "CAG".

If you are still not meeting the assessment requirements you must apply to your Program Manager in writing outlining the steps you will take to demonstrate competence in your course.  Your submission will be considered by the Program Team and you will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible.
