Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to gather client information, make a physical assessment of the body and determine massage treatment options. This unit applies to massage therapists providing general health maintenance treatments. It does not include remedial massage assessment techniques. This unit applies to massage therapists.

• Students will learn to apply their skills and knowledge to work integrated learning (WIL) in the student & clinical practice environment, during simulations and classroom based learning

• Work experience &/or placements observation of performance in the workplace will be a valuable part of your learning experience

• Tutorial activities (individually and in teams) to discuss, debate, critique and consolidate your ideas and extend your understanding around key concepts within specific topics

• Online discussions and activities to support and collaborate with other students in your course and debate and discuss ideas

• Utilise and develop critical research and cognitive skills to find credible sources of health information

• Self-directed study time (eg. readings or activities around theory) to enhance and strengthen your knowledge and understanding of theoretical concepts

• To further facilitate learning students are strongly encouraged to use a range of communication tools between themselves and their course instructor as well as between themselves and fellow students by using the online learning platform

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Tasks   Clinical Assessment Tasks Task 1.1 Clinical Assessment Task 1.2 Clinical Assessment Task 1.3 Clinical Assessment Task 1.4 Clinical Assessment Task 1.5 Clinical Assessment The clinical assessment tasks summary and purpose: • The student will be given a case study that relates to the region being assessed. • The student will be assessed on their ability to demonstrate an understanding of their clinical assessment, anatomical knowledge through palpation of regional muscles.   Task 2 Anatomy Portfolio The anatomy portfolio summary and purpose: • The student will be assessed on their ability to demonstrate an understanding of their anatomical knowledge. This Assessment and Anatomy Portfolio task is one of 4 assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily. • All sections of this Anatomy Portfolio need to be completed. This portfolio will be separated into 6 segments to upload progressively through the semester.     Task 3 Short Answer Assessment The short answer summary and purpose: • This assessment is for the student to respond to the series of short questions in relation to the knowledge aspect of the unit. • Student should use their classroom resources, external books or websites to respond to the questions provided.   Task 4 Clinic Treatment The clinic treatment summary and purpose: • The purpose of this assessment is to assess your skills and knowledge to assess client massage needs, perform (ROM) range of movement testing and palpation on a client within a clinical setting. This will be performed on ten (10) separate clients. This includes: o LOOTRDIOOPS o Palpation o AROM o PROM o RROM • These clients are part of the 40 required clients for this unit. • This is a formative assessment; therefore, you must collate information on 10 clients, de-identified their history and initial intake forms to submit to Canvas.   Practical Demonstration in Clinic There will be aspects of this unit that need to be demonstrated within your clinical practice in the student clinic. This includes a minimum of 40 Satisfactory hours of clinical work in the student clinic. Please refer to canvas for due date. Please see your Clinic Manual for more information
