Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to obtain and interpret information about client health status and to check a client’s physical health. It requires a detailed knowledge of anatomy and physiology.


This unit applies to individuals working directly with clients and who assist in the provision of health care services. Some disciplines may be subject to state/territory regulatory determination regarding delegation and supervision.

Learning Outcomes


The critical learning for this course takes place in clinical placement within the health sector and within simulations in RMIT.  You will be instructed in skills through demonstration, modelling and role play.

Skills development is supported by lectures on theory and underpinning knowledge,classroom discussions, group work, research and reflective practice.  On completion of this course, you should be able to demonstrate the below mentioned outcomes satisfactorily -

  3. Identify variations from normal physical health status


Details of Learning Activities

Learning activities will consist of a number of face to face and online classes, incorporating power point presentations, flipped classrooms and practical activities. Self directed learning activities are also available in the Canvas to be completed at your own pace.

You are not required to purchase any specific text, however most of the teaching will be done using Marieb, E. (2018) Essentials of human anatomy and physiology. Pearson. San Francisco.


Overview of Assessment

To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency. Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks.

Assessment Tasks

There are 4 assessments for this course.

 You must be deemed satisfactory for each of these assessment tasks.

 

Assessment Task 1, 2 & 3 - Case Study

(Due: Task 1 - 29th March, Task 2 - 3rd May, Task 3 - 11th June)

Three (3) case studies will be used to demonstrate your knowledge relating to anatomy, physiology and medical terminology knowledge testing, common disorders and causes of diseases.  A case study will be given with students to complete short answer questions.

 

Assessment Task 4 - Clinical observations of 3 clients in the RMIT clinic must be completed before the end of Semester  (Due Friday 5th June, 2020)

Other Information

Prior to clinical placement you will be given a clinical skills log book, and this will be the record you will require for Assessment 4.

Important information regarding Assessment Tasks:

 

You are permitted to have a maximum of 4 resubmissions for this course. However each individual assessment may only be resubmitted once. 

Resubmissions are not automatic and will only be approved at the discretion of the Program Coordinator, after consultation with the teacher.

All students will be contacted with 7 days by their course coordinator in regards to  resubmission completion dates.

   

Please note an opportunity to repeat clinical placement is not guaranteed and will be at the discretion of the Clinical Coordinator/Program Manager.

 

EXTENSION OR SPECIAL CONSIDERATION

If due to illness or other unforeseen circumstance, you are unable to attend on the due date of an assessment (e.g. test, examination, oral, etc.) OR you do attend, but your performance has been affected, you may submit an APPLICATION FOR SPECIAL CONSIDERATION within 5 working days of the due date. If Special Consideration is granted, you will be given the opportunity to complete/repeat the assessment task at a later date. For advice on this application please visit www.rmit.edu.au/students/specialconsideration or speak to your Program Coordinator.
If due to illness or other unforeseen circumstance, you are unable to submit by the due date (e.g. assignment, report, project etc.):
you may submit an APPLICATION FOR EXTENSION OF TIME FOR SUBMISSION OF ASSESSABLE WORK for an extension of time of up to seven (7) calendar days or less. This must be lodged with the Program Coordinator 1 working day before the original due date. If granted, you will have the opportunity to submit up to 7 days later than the original due date.
