Learning Outcomes

The critical learning for this course takes place in clinical placement within the health sector and within simulations in RMIT.  You will be instructed in skills through demonstration, modelling and role play.

Skills development is supported by lectures on theory and underpinning knowledge, classroom discussions, group work, research and reflective practice.  On completion of this course, you should be able to demonstrate the below mentioned outcomes satisfactorily -

  1. Obtain information about physical health status
  2. Check physical health status
  3. Identify variations from normal physical health status

Details of Learning Activities

Course description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to obtain and interpret information about client health status and to check a client’s physical health. It requires a detailed knowledge of anatomy and physiology.

At the completion of the unit, the student will have the skills and knowledge required to work with basic information about the human body and to recognise and promote ways to maintain healthy functioning of the body.

This unit applies to individuals working directly with clients and who assist in the provision of health care services

How this course runs

The learning and teaching for the unit will be taught over sixteen (16) weeks via face to face teaching. You will also apply your knowledge to weekly student clinic practical applications.

Assessments

Performance Assessment: Throughout this unit you must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that the candidate has:

  • obtained, correctly interpreted and used anatomical and physiological client information to check the physical health status of at least 3 different people presenting with different conditions
Knowledge Assessment: You must be able to demonstrate essential knowledge required to effectively complete contingencies in the context of the work role. You will gather this via three (3) Case Study Assessments. The essential knowledge will include:
  • role responsibilities and limitations for different members of the care team in relation to checking client health status
  • concepts underpinning human anatomy and physiology
  • structure and function of human body systems and their interactions
  • anatomical and medical terminology
  • common disorders, problems and complaints and their signs and symptoms, associated with each body system and its components relevant to the area of work
  • basic pharmacology in relation to cautions and contraindications for relevant health procedures
  • causes of disease – physical, mental and emotional, and key features of each cause
  • major types of cellular adaptation
  • processes of metabolism, nutrition, body temperature regulation, biological maturation, inheritance and ageing
  • Oral health disease of the mouth and teeth including edentulous (no-natural teeth) and dentate (having natural teeth)
  • variations from normal functioning and appropriate responses
