Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare for and provide remedial massage treatments based on the outcomes of an existing health assessment and treatment plan.
This unit applies to remedial massage therapists working with clients presenting with soft tissue dysfunction, musculoskeletal imbalance or restrictions in range of motion (ROM).

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1 (1.1-1.6)- Skill Assessment

This assessment task is to be conducted in a simulated clinical environment in Building 51, Level 7, Room 3.

 

Assessment Task 1.1-1.5

Students will be asked to perform the full assessment and required treatment for a region of the body. You will be required to answer questions related to the region and treatment. To be deemed satisfactory in this assessment, you must demonstrate skills listed in the marking sheet.

You will be given a time frame to complete the task. During this time the assessors will be observing your skills and asking questions pertaining to your understanding of the treatment you are providing. 

 

Assessment Task 1.6 - Industry skills assessment 

Students will be asked to perform the full assessment and treatment for a random case study relating to a region of the body. You will be required to answer questions related to the region and treatment. To be deemed satisfactory in this assessment, you must demonstrate skills listed in the marking sheet.

You will be given a time frame to complete the task. During this time the assessors will be observing your skills and asking questions pertaining to your understanding of the treatment you are providing.

 

 

Assessment Task 2 – Clinic observation checklist

This assessment task is to be conducted in student clinic and external to RMIT. Students will be asked to  perform remedial massage techniques on clients to which they will be observed. They will also have to answer knowledge questions which can be answered external to RMIT. Your clinic supervisor will be observing your skills and knowledge pertaining your understanding of the treatment techniques you are providing. You must receive a mark of S (Satisfactory) throughout the assessment in all criteria. If a student receives a NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) for any of the skills, or takes longer than the allocated time to complete all sections, they will be deemed not yet satisfactory for this assessment. 

 

 Assessment Task 3 (3.1 - 3.2)– Knowledge Assessment 

 

Assessment Task 3.1 - Clinic Entrance knowledge questions  

This assessment task allows you to demonstrate your knowledge related to the clinic policies and procedures that you will/may come across in your student clinic time at RMIT.

Assessment Task 3.2 - Knowledge questions 

This knowledge assessment will allow you show your understanding of how to apply Remedial Massage Techniques, and how to apply them to certain musculoskeletal conditions.

This assessment has 4 sections:

    1. How to apply remedial massage techniques
    2. On what conditions do we apply certain techniques
    3. Potential reactions during treatment
    4. Potential reactions following treatment

There will be aspects of these co-delivered units that need to be demonstrated within your clinical practice in the student clinic. Please see your Clinic Logbook.

                                                                 

Students must be deemed satisfactory for each listed assessment task in order to be deemed competent for the unit.

Each individual assessment may only be resubmitted once. 

Resubmissions are not automatic and will only be approved at the discretion of the Program Coordinator, after consultation with the teacher.

All students will be contacted with 7 days by their course coordinator in regards to  re submission completion dates.

   

Please note an opportunity to repeat clinical placement is not guaranteed and will be at the discretion of the Clinical Coordinator/Program Manager.

 

EXTENSION OR SPECIAL CONSIDERATION

If due to illness or other unforeseen circumstance, you are unable to attend on the due date of an assessment (e.g. test, examination, oral, etc.) OR you do attend, but your performance has been affected, you may submit an APPLICATION FOR SPECIAL CONSIDERATION within 5 working days of the due date. If Special Consideration is granted, you will be given the opportunity to complete/repeat the assessment task at a later date. For advice on this application please visit www.rmit.edu.au/students/specialconsideration or speak to your Program Coordinator.
If due to illness or other unforeseen circumstance, you are unable to submit by the due date (e.g. assignment, report, project etc.):
you may submit an APPLICATION FOR EXTENSION OF TIME FOR SUBMISSION OF ASSESSABLE WORK for an extension of time of up to seven (7) calendar days or less. This must be lodged with the Program Coordinator 1 working day before the original due date. If granted, you will have the opportunity to submit up to 7 days later than the original due date.
