Course Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare for and provide remedial massage treatments based on the outcomes of an existing health assessment and treatment plan.
This unit applies to remedial massage therapists working with clients presenting with soft tissue dysfunction, musculoskeletal imbalance or restrictions in range of motion (ROM).

Overview of Assessment
To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency. Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks.

Assessment Tasks
There will be 5 assessment tasks to assess your ability to apply the skills and knowledge delivered in class and outlined in the course notes.
Assessment Task 1- Skill Assessments (1.1-1.6)
This assessment task is to be conducted in a simulated clinical environment in Building 51, Level 7, Room 3. Students will be asked to perform the full assessment and required treatment for a region of the body. To be deemed satisfactory in this assessment, students must demonstrate the skills listed in the marking sheet.
You will be given a timeframe to complete the task. During this time the assessors will be observing your skills and asking questions pertaining to your understanding of the treatment you are providing. You must receive a mark of S (Satisfactory) throughout the assessment in all criteria. If a student receives a NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) for any of the skills or takes longer than the allocated time to complete all sections, they will be deemed not yet satisfactory for this assessment.
Assessment Task 2 – Clinic observation checklist
This assessment task is to be conducted in student clinic. Your clinic supervisor will be observing your skills and knowledge pertaining your understanding of the treatment techniques you are providing. You must receive a mark of S (Satisfactory) throughout the assessment in all criteria. If a student receives a NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) for any of the skills or takes longer than the allocated time to complete all sections, they will be deemed not yet satisfactory for this assessment.
Assessment Task 3 – Knowledge Assessments (3.1 – 3.2)
For this assessment you are asked to answer questions which relate to the clinic policies and procedures that you will/may come across in your student clinic time at RMIT. Please answer all questions using full sentences (not dot points).
You must also complete the questions relating to Providing Remedial Massage techniques and the potential reactions that can occur during and post treatment. You must receive a mark of S (Satisfactory) throughout the assessment in all criteria. If a student receives a NYS (Not Yet Satisfactory) for any of the skills or takes longer than the allocated time to complete all sections, they will be deemed not yet satisfactory for this assessment.

Students must demonstrate competency in each listed assessment task in order to be deemed satisfactory for the unit.

Important information regarding Assessment Tasks:
Each individual assessment may only be resubmitted once.
Resubmissions are not automatic and will only be approved at the discretion of the Program Coordinator, after consultation with the teacher.
All students will be contacted with 7 days by their course coordinator in regards to resubmission completion dates.
Please note an opportunity to repeat clinical placement is not guaranteed and will be at the discretion of the Clinical Coordinator/Program Manager.
EXTENSION OR SPECIAL CONSIDERATION
If due to illness or other unforeseen circumstance, you are unable to attend on the due date of an assessment (e.g. test, examination, oral, etc.) OR you do attend, but your performance has been affected, you may submit an APPLICATION FOR SPECIAL CONSIDERATION within 5 working days of the due date. If Special Consideration is granted, you will be given the opportunity to complete/repeat the assessment task at a later date. For advice on this application please visit www.rmit.edu.au/students/specialconsideration or speak to your Program Coordinator.
If due to illness or other unforeseen circumstance, you are unable to submit by the due date (e.g. assignment, report, project etc.):
you may submit an APPLICATION FOR EXTENSION OF TIME FOR SUBMISSION OF ASSESSABLE WORK for an extension of time of up to seven (7) calendar days or less. This must be lodged with the Program Coordinator 1 working day before the original due date. If granted, you will have the opportunity to submit up to 7 days later than the original due date.
